Title: Turbo 91' civic 4door build.
Post by: turbob16hatch on December 11, 2009, 05:47:57 AM
Well it is time to post up my build. I have had this civic for about a year and had a ghetto turbo kit on it last summer and it has served as a good DD. Well the engine finally had enough of the no radiator fan and hot summer days and overheated/cracked the radiator. So i pulled the stock d15 and thats where it sat as of 3 months ago.

Well it is a 91' civic lx 4 door that has been mpfi swaped and obd1 converted using a boomslang harness ( pretty badass). The goal with this build was to have a DD sleeper civic that looks and drives about a close to stock as i can get with 250 whp. I don't like gauges everywhere, slammed cars, and engine bays that have parts that look out of place. Thsi is pretty much a test bed for my own idea's towards turbo honda's. I like oem looking turbo kits and installs so i try and make my turbo kits make sense so there will be no 3" charge piping and T67 turbo's running 3 psi AKA no honda-tech builds for me.

Car:

The desision to build the engine that way i am has all to do with me being a cheap ass and loving to build oddball stuff. The compression is not to much of a concern. There can't be any worse low end performance then the stock dpfi d15.  :?: Pictures to come of the enigne.

So for this winter turbo kit i will be running the following

- Garrett T25
- 1.25" sch10 "quick spool" manifold
- 2.5" turbo back exhaust
- modified srt 4 intercooler
- 1.75" hot side charge piping
- 2" cold side charge piping
- 1g dsm bov recurculated
- 680cc injectors
- walbro 255 fuel pump

The point of me building this kit is to have a very responsive street car that will have great power at almost any cruising rpm. Turbo responce being the key here i went with a small diamiter short runner manifold with a 2" collector. This should still flow well up top but give me some nice spool up. The T25 turbo i had from my old turbo kit and should work great on 10lbs. I personally don't like loud bov's so i plan on recurculating the dsm bov back into the intake to quit it down some, and also help a small amount with keeping the turbo spooled.

Turbo manifold:

Well thats it for now, i will try to update as i finish up more things on the car.

ME LIEK.

The 4dr's are fun cars for DD's, especially in MPFI form. I enjoyed both of mine, and they can hold LOTS of junk if you pull out a seat or three. I only wish I had used a smaller turbo on mine. That t25 should spool up very quick.

Only thing I'd change is the psi you run. If you really want a non-Honda-tack kit, you'll use a 2.5bar+ MAP and do at least 15psi.

srt4 intercoolers fit almost like the were supposed to be there. a little rad support cutting and the fit like a glove on an ef. we fitted one to my old 4wd wagon.

Because this is my winter turbo kit, I will have a summer turbo kit that will make more power then this little T25 can put out.

i screwed up a oil ring the other night and said fuck it for the night. have another on order. stupid mistake after checking clearances i rushed with the ring compressor and bent a ring. I'm an idiot.

ive done it before too.  if it doesn't go in with a few taps of the handle of a hammer, pull it out and check to make sure the compressor has the rings good.  it should go in just a little with each tap, if it doesn't then be aware

Well here is my little update.

Obd 0 d16a6 intake manifold that i clean up the ports on and polished the throttle plate. I cleaned it and assembled with my 680cc injectors.

TPS removed from old IM and added with SS hardware.

Here is the turbo outlet that i welded up. I made the 3 bolt flange and used an outlet tube of a 1g dsm smic. (btw hardest thing i ever welded as it was 3/8 plate to 16g with no room to spare for the bolts)
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi71.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi123%2Fmattgroshong%2FD16a6enginepics035.jpg&hash=7fce6ec5af3b085c7b9068bb96e3942e3c3eeb6a)

here is the srt4 intercooler core i made new end tanks for. It has 2" outlets and mounts to the radiator support. still fits the oem power steering cooler.

Yes.

Pin offset is correct for Honduhs this way, and keeps them from souding like a diesel.

I read that on the internet somewhere....

Well not much of an update on the car itself but i did find my turbo i will be running on the "summer" turbo kit.  My long search is over for the little guy.

Stock 300zx T3 60 trim, stg1 turbine .63 a/r housing.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi71.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi123%2Fmattgroshong%2Ft360trimandhousingpics001.jpg&hash=7460a4b6b80814d926ac53541a14f67df3b9b6a5)

I'm still unsure if i'm going to run the .48 a/r or the .63 a/r hot side. Goal here is for a nice fat powerband with a 7000-7200 rpm redline.

Before this goes on the car i will rebuild it and get it all cleaned up. Also i will get a wet center housing to add some longevity.

I'm building it a/c compatable. I removed my a/c as it had a leak and stopped working mid summer. I will get it back in this summer and get the p/s cooler replaced with a more conventional "radiator" style core that will replace the heat sink tube thing thats in the way.

my vitaras pointed towards the t-belt.  didnt sound like a diesel.  honestly, it sounded stock even with super sloppy p2w

might be a stupid question but are the arrows supposed to face the back of the engine with vitaras?
I did a right up on oHMT about the how the arrows on vitaras should face the flywheel because of the pin offset.
If you look up a vitara pdf the arrows should point to there crank pully which is on the left side of the engine.
vitata clockwise
d16 counter clock.

I like your build BTW, the mani got my pants all tight.  ;)

I used to have one, i decided to go back to the old school a6 one. Has nothing to do with performance i just thought it fit the car better.

Paint that IC black

You get your LS rods modified at a machine shop local to you?

You know i had thought about painting it, but I'm unsure if it will just chip and look like shit it a week. Any experience with them painted?

Yes, there is a really laid back machine shop in town that builds all the dirt track car engines (just don't expect anything to be done a few months before racing starts). It was $140 out the door for them.

Mine too. About once a year I give it 1 coat just to clean it up.

UPDATE:

Well i finished the top section of the downpipe. This is my "o2 housing' sort of minus the o2. the lower part still needs the flex section and 3 bolt flange welded on but i forgot to run to the exhaust place and get material so that will be finished tomorrow. I also have the 2.5" exhaust started but i need to get flanges. Sense I'm making this 2 pieces (i hate one piece exhausts) i had to hold off till tomorrow, plus building exhaust with no lift is BS.

Do not insult my pie cut welds, there less then stellar.  :'(

top section:

Complete turbo assembly ready for install:

Lower section v band weld:
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi87.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fk125%2FBumpinjcc%2FDownpipe%2FBestV-band.jpg&hash=99a358f3e4335d351bb31bd68f3a4003666b1b21)

I still need to fabricate a heat shield for the turbo, but maybe i can fit that in tomorrow.
