Lol, it will have to be when my yard is dry. The dyno is at the very back of my 2 acres and if it rained recently you’re definitely not driving a car back there. I wish it was more accessible but I couldn’t justify taking up that much room in my shop where I actually work on stuff.

Well nogs...... I have finally achieved the dream probably all of us have had. I got a dyno so cheap it can just sit in my home shop and never make a dime. That does mean there is a compromise, it has small rollers so it's not going to be used with 1000+ HP stuff but still going to be incredibly useful.
Now for the long version of the story. Way back about 15 years ago when I was very actively street tuning Hondas I came across this dyno for sale on Craigslist for $2000. I exchanged a few emails with the guy and was planning to buy it, but had something pop up that needed all of the cash I had. Couple that with actively going through a divorce and I figured it wouldn't happen. About a month went by and the guy emailed me saying he dropped the price to $1000 and needed to move it ASAP. I was still insanely tight on money and didn't think I could do it. For the hell of it I told him I had $500, I wasn't trying to haggle or be a dick. I was literally digging in the couch cushions to find $500. He said if I could pick it up that same day it was mine. I took off from work, grabbed my car trailer and headed to meet him. That was cool and all but he didn't have a computer with it, just the rollers/frame, dyno controller, water pump and regulator. I talked to Land and Sea who made the controller and brake only to find out the software was $900. While that doesn't sound horrible I was living in a house I bought with the plans of having 2 incomes plus paying the ex back for what she paid into the house and stuff I kept in the divorce. That was way out of reach. When I finally got my life sorted out Land and Sea went out of business so now I am really stuck. Watching Steve Morris Engines YouTube video, he was converting one of his dynos to YouDyno.com controls. I checked out their site and they had a dyno controller for $1400. Seemed too good to be true. A few emails back and forth with them and a week later their controller showed up at my house. Took a few times of Jostien(creator of YourDyno) logging into my dyno computer but we got it all sorted. It was tough to find time since he is in Norway. When he is available my neighbors would be calling the cops since it was early in the morning and when it was reasonable here he was about to go to sleep. Now I am a super happy dyno owner and hope to use it to do a lot of work testing and build my YouTube channel with it. For those that don't know, I work for a Holley EFI dealer now doing tech support, technical sales and remote tuning from home. It's pretty incredible. Here is a video from the first fully successful dyno pull with a stock Miata. You'll have to ignore the pop up window power numbers. That is calculated engine power and is not accurate, but the measured power at the wheels is accurate and that's what displays on the graph. https://www.instagram.com/dirtysidegetsdown/reel/DBhcfpAugmI/ |
