Chips in sleeve?

I just received a b18a block from a friend for free minus an oilpan.  I removed the crank, rods, and pistons to a god awful smell of burnt oil.  So i figure it more than likely spun a bearing.  Main caps look good, crank looks fine, so I figure for free, I don't care if I throw it in and boost it til it blows.  The thing concerning me, is that it has a few chips out of the outer sleeve walls up top.  No apparent cracks anywhere else, a quick hone and everything eyeballed out to look good, but what would cause cracks on the outside of the sleeve where the coolant flows?  If it weren't for this, I would have no problem buying some bearings, and see what it's capable of.  I just don't want this goofy sleeve taking my freshly rebuilt head with it. I'll get pics as soon as I'm able to borrow a cam.

You pulled the crank out and suspected a spun bearing because of a burnt oil smell?? ??? Burnt oil smell isn't uncommon when disassembling an engine. I haven't had a b18a apart, but are the "chips" on the outside of the bore just clearance marks for the head studs?

Deal, looks like onward to some acl race bearings, arp rod bolts, cheap ass autozone rings, and a boosted motor on the CHEAP!!!!   And carnage pics if the shtf.

If you are on the cheap, NPR rings can be had on ebay for $30 or so.

Sounds good, thanks.  Any insight into bearings?   Fuck the OEM vs Race.  How bout king/acl?  I believe I can get main/rod/thrust for 105 for king, to 110 for acl.  Anyone got any input, cause I could honestly give a shit less about checking spec on some bearings and ordering by colors and numbers and shit.

as for bearings. they all seem to work. ACL/King/Clievite77/...there was another one too...

sewell and JD were talking about what big name manufactures made the bearings different china auto parts stores sold and which ones were good.  I don't remember if it was on this site or the other place before the move.
