Looking to build a PC that will withstand the abuse of being in a hot ass shop.  Getting tired of using the slow pile of fuck on the alignment machine for internet access and streaming music.  I would like to toss it together as cheap as possible.  New or used parts makes no difference to me.

I am mainly looking for suggestions for an inexpensive processor that will handle a moderate load without melting down when it gets to 100 degrees in the shop.

Unless you're gaming or doing something process intensive (encoding, 3d rendering, other fun shit)  just about any computer you build is going to be able to handle what you want to do with it.

I assume you mean hardware that is not 9+ years old, and did not originate from Dell.   

I have an old AMD XP3000 based system as my home desktop, but that fucker runs damn near 60 degrees C in ambient air that is about 75 degrees F with what I would call a moderate load.

I would assume that iTX setups consume very little power, and inherently run relatively cool.  This one caught my eye.

That would do it for you.

Just make some filters for the case air inlets to keep shop dust out of it, then keep a check on them for clogging.

By the time you factor in a touchscreen and a power supply, it is about even.  Factor in the ability to add navigation and it really does seem stupid to go with a car stereo.

Core2Duo (older Intel now) will turn you out. Most have a thermal max of 85C, which translates into fucking hotter than you'll ever get it. The stock cooler in a sealed case overclocked 50% won't even reach that. Any AMD version will not even overclock that high, and burn up before that. With a decent vid card, it will do anything you want it to, unless you're running dual screens and want full-speed CAD rendering while gaming in the other screen at 1920xfuckingwhatever resolution.


An Atom processor like JD linked to is the best price/performance for an internet/music box. I'm actually going to do that vs a stereo when I get a "grown up" car. With forced induction (fan-cooled ) it won't overheat. They are designed to be used in dinky laptops with piss-poor fans, or none at all. That barebones combined with 2 extra 60mm fans would handle Equidor's heat.

The 7.8" Innovatek touchscreens are under $100 if you look around. 

Most in-car LCDs need to have proper voltage regulation to prevent the LCD from dying quickly... needs to be run off a good regulated PS like the motherboard does, so you get to size that a little larger.

try the zotac ion, it does well with blueray and hd content, has a decent performance integrated graphics, and ive meassured mine consuming 45w even lower than my 60w laptop

c2d does take a bit of heat.  i3/i5/i7 are very stable too but not quite as cheap as a c2d system.

My 65nm Q6600 C2D is supposed to stay below 70C.  I've had it oc'ed from 2.4ghz to 3.6ghz for about a year and a half, frequently running at 68-70C at 100% load.

Still going.

Really any proc will be fine, but the lower the wattage, typically the better.

At full tilt at stock voltages with the stock cooler - yeah maybe it heats up. But as I said, it has a very high thermal max. You can run it at 80C 24/7 and if it breaks they will honor the warranty, mainly because they WILL throttle down at severe temps. Speaking of throttling, it will also run at a reduced speed whenever idle (if you want), and if you get a notebook chip & compatable motherboard, it will also reduce the voltage at idle. IIRC my T60's cpu drops to ~1 volt at idle, newer chips can even go below that.

What all that means is with a $40 cooler added, the stock clockspeed & voltage reduced (both retain warranty), you get something that creates 1/2 the heat of the stocker, but still burns a mini-chip like an Atom.

Um its a c2d 6320 on a gigabyte 965p-ds3 mobo with 2 gigs of ddr2 800 gskill ram it just got replaced by my i5-750 build its just sitting here. Thing runs pretty cool even on a stock heatsink. And theres always downclocking and undervolting thing never idled above 20-30* and at load never passed 60*

knew a guy who hooked it up in a kia sorento.  Probably one of the cleanest installs of a car PC ive ever seen.  Dudes Mr wizard, reads something one time and just knows it forwards backwards and inbetween.

He took the stocker radio and tossed teh CD player and replaced it with a USB DVD burner.  Even solders the leads into it so when you hit eject on the radio it spits out the DVD.  fucking Sick

well its Windows Built off TinyXP so really just install your engine software toonar stuff and drop an Icon in your interface.

this guy had a pretty sweet setup.  Used the stock DIN slots where the stereo normally is and molded in a 7" touchscreen.  If I hadn't just bought a deck when I saw this, I'd probably have replicated it.
