How many steps colder do you run?
« on: January 11, 2010, 04:42:29 PM »

I discovered that on a local car forum people are running 2-3 steps colder and not making fuckloads of hp. I see on reason for this, perhaps I can be educated but in all honestly i've only ever run 1 step colder with no problems.

I run 8s.

On all but high boost noggle action im sure the 7s would be fine, and actually not load up as quick on the street in stop and go....

i have always ran bkr7e's also when boosted.

but how much power or w/e can you make and still get away with stock heat range plugs?

stock civic si (d16a6) plugs are 5's or 6's?

Depends on what brand plug.  NGKs are rated not only for their heat range, but the adjacent ones as well.  That's why they last so long and even domestic guys rock them.  Really good stuff.  Autolites aren't bad, either, I'm just not up on the numbering system like I am with NGK so meh.

If you run some crap, Densos for example (interesting how they make GREAT sensors but shitty sparkplugs), they die really quick if you don't use the correct heatrange.  If you do use the correct heatrange they last a lot longer - but then die quickly when compared to Autolite or NGK.

i was taught only way to know your runing proper plug range is to tune it run the plug that looks best in your motor. if you have a 7 and have to gap 20 mabey and 8 at higher gap would suffice

most of the time if ur seriously  running a colder plug then u are usually running race gas or making some pretty decent power, i had a friend that ran 2 steps colder on c16 made 684whp tuned by jeff evans and evans only recomended 2 steps . The bkre73's should be enough when boosted.

why would you not run it, it makes no sense. If there is a water cooled section it was designed to be run with it for cooling. Pretty sure garrett knows better then some fat guy in a accord. nbspnbsp :P

(BUT CROME SURE DIDNT LIKE THE NR ones)

Never had an issues running non resistor plugs with crome. I've ran 4091's for 25k miles without any issues except noise interference to the radio signal.

BKR7Es (4644 now). Stock was a 6 (BCPR6E-11s or something). I was going to go with an 8 (NR), but was told not to, because of interferences with Crome.

Only COP cars, poorly designed Hondata daughterboards, and fat men in boat anchors have issues with non-resistor plugs.

Different motors want different things.  I ran NGK 8 heat range plugs in my last GSX, small turbo LOTS of boost, and reading the heat band on the plug was spot on.  With 7's it would have funny random misfires in the midrange (even with more fuel added) and with the gap closed.  Not a stock 4g63 btw, head cut, cams, etc, etc.

My bkr8es' only last a couple weeks on pump gas, my 325whp is not enough for 8's.  I switched to 7's and its been running great.  I've always heard don't switch to 8's until 500whp and up.
