High end fashionista JDM fanboy turbos: aka HKS trust ect
« on: January 14, 2010, 09:06:38 PM »

Is their really truly any merit to these fucking turbos? t1z's to4zs ect?  Compared to a BW , Holest or just a plain garret are they really worth the extra coin. I don't want one but im curious why all these jdm fucktards keep buying them like they are the holy grail of power adders.  Is it just plain stupidity and ignorance.  I'm currently in a debate with a guy over holset vs t51R.

Enlighten me. I have my ideas/experiences to why, im curious as to yours.

If they flow and spool and last as long as their inexpensive counterparts, NO.

It is just a name and being able to brag about having so and so part.

I had an hks gt2530.

You know what happens when you suck a rock into a $1200 ball bearing turbo?  You pay for an $800 chra or hold your hand on your dick.

You know how many holsets you can buy with 2 grand?

I honestly believe if a holset sucked up a rock it would tell the rock to fuck off and smash it into a million pieces and then keep working properly.

Rocks yes, slag from cheap shotty welding not so much.

Realistically tho fuck , comon.  Unless that turbo spools 1500rpms sooner its not worth it. People just assume since diesaled out turbos are so big and old that they are low tech.  Fucking marketing did its job with garrett turbos, that is for sure.

If a holset sucks up a rock and fucks it up, big deal.  They are inexpensive.

You pretty much nailed it on the head, TTC.  It's JDM fanboi retards that think if you pay more for a part, it's instantly better than anything else.

I'm just waiting for my turbos to blow up on my R32 so I can throw a Holset on it and piss people off when I spend way less money and make more power.

Dieseled out turbos fucking suck, the end, no arguments permitted.  The common Holsets are not dieseled out, they lose a little bit of peak flow the compressor could support by the exhaust being a little large, but for the most part are designed correctly.  You need to look at some of the diesel units running around that have .40 trim compressors and HUGE exhaust wheels you can't spool.

I assumed all holsets were dieseled out since they came from diesels.   I might be misinterpreting the term.

The dsmtards are bolting holset compressors/chra onto custom mitsufeces turbine housings, and making stupid power out of them.  Granted most are to the far left of the map in the low rpm's, and will eventually kill the turbo, but they work really well. Holset were designed for abuse, they can take it and dish it out.

Like what? Most diesel turbos I see are good with a turbine housing swap. Holsets, BW S300 and 400 series, journal bearing Gt42's.

Right.  GT45 turbines with the smallest trim GT42 compressor are about the best way to make 700 whp out of a 50 lb turbo with shitty spool properties.

Yeah the only useful thing ive seen done with a journal Gt42 is twin setups on diesels. However you must have overlooked the rest of the question in your haste to slam it.

Nope, I didn't overlook it.  I have a GT4594LR sitting on the Red Bull display at the shop that is a perfect example of this, a lot of that diesel shit is off.

What is the compressor wheel inducer size on that?

The rice boy/turbo nut in me LOVES the sound of the T51R though. Every car I've ever seen it on it whistles so much. I fucking love it.  Not that I would ever spend that much lol.

I'm running a GT3271, and if I redo my turbo/manifold/downpipe this summer, I've considered putting a holset on it.

On a Miata, I'd look at Evo 8,9, and 10 turbo's.  They are incredible turbos if you take some time and think about how to design a turbo setup for them.  They are typically turbine limited so a long runner manifold and free flowing exhaust are the most necessary things to create a super broad powerband.

You want a turbo that whistles? Get a anti-surge Borg-Warner or Hoslut w/o a silencer ring. This is a S256 with an undivided .70 a/r T3 housing on a stock gsr:

http://www.supload.com/sound_confirm.php?get=1042056769.wav

http://www.supload.com/sound_confirm.php?get=816814609.wav

Now imagine what a big wheeled S3xx would sound like... All for a fraction of the T51R price. Spend $3 on an HKS sticker if you want your local jdm fanbois to splurge in their 16yr old pants.

btw I just noticed the smilie I made is "official":  Jew Jew Jew Jew Jew Jew Jew Jew Jew Jew Jew Jew

Oh my HE351Ve whistles far more than the T51R out the exhaust before the VGT opens. Just not out of the compressor like the T51R does.  I'm guessing its part of the surge porting.  The T51R is just a larger turbo that sounds amazing, and coupled with an I6 its even better.

ya holsets fuckin whistle.   my car sounded like a grabage truck

here i found my youtube videos of me trying to wreck it when i thought it was fucked anyways. we were expecting some kind of major engine failure/explosion that never happened. at some point i pulled the line off the WG and let it do its thing.  people did call the cops though, and my clutch started slipping really bad.    this was some bastard 14 or 16cm non-wastgated vband turbine housing hx35 i got from some guy who races dodge trucks (and wins). im told the video didnt capture the sound well
