USB thumb drives?
« on: January 20, 2010, 07:00:33 PM »

I'm wanting to buy a thumb drive. The only one I have is the one that came with my laptop I bought back in 06', and it's a 128Mb...

So I'm looking on ebay and there's people selling 64 GB thumb drives starting bid 99 cents, free shipping, and the bids are closing without anybody buying them. I mean, is it a gimmick or are they really that cheap? Isn't that giving them away after shipping?

I got 6.55 in ebay bucks I need to use before they expire, that's why I was looking for something cheap to buy. Anything that was say 20 GB would work, doesn't have to be a thumb drive. Small external hardrive would work, just needs to be 30 bucks or less. I don't want to spend a fortune on a 500GB thing I'll never use.

How much space do you really need on a thumb?

You sure it's 64gb and not some retarded adapter or something?

link? :P

I'll probably buy an IronKey USB drive next...pricey, but secure, durable, fast, and has quick customer service.

Here's a link to a 32gb:

http://cgi.ebay.com/32GB-USB-2-0-Thumb-Drive-32G-Flash-Memoy-Pen-Stick-a_W0QQitemZ180455399494QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPCC_Drives_Storage_Internal?hash=item2a03fae046

Here's a 128Gb..

 http://cgi.ebay.com/128GB-USB-Flash-Drive-DATATRAVELER-200-BRAND-NEW_W0QQitemZ160397037757QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPCC_Drives_Storage_Internal?hash=item25586890bd

So are they not reliable I guess? I didn't think about that. The 128Mb one I got from dell has always worked fine, but I mean I don't abuse it or anything, just use it sometimes.

No clue about those eBay auctions.  First one looks china so yeah it's worth a dollar, the second?  I think Datatraveller is a Kingston unit, but I think they named the "company" Datatraveller to ride some coattails.

I have an abiding passion for SanDisk Cruisers, you just format that fucking U3 crap off of it and use the piss out of it.  I lose them before they break, unlike some others I've had.

www.newegg.com

Buy from someone with good prices that will ship it quickly and replace it if needed...

What do you plan to use it for?

If you're just going to carry documents here and there and maybe a little music, 4-8gb is more than sufficient.

Damn, no I sure as hell didn't look at that. Ok, scratch that off the list....

JD- You say SanDisk cruisers are good. I looked on ebay and saw this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Sandisk-Cruzer-USB-2-0-Flash-Drive-16-GB-NEW-Free-Ship_W0QQitemZ260540663146QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPCC_Drives_Storage_Internal?hash=item3ca96f056a

That's an old listing, but it didn't sell for 99 cents and 3 bucks shipping.

I just wanted it to be able to move files with, save stuff, etc. Nothing big. But when I saw how cheap a 32Gb was on ebay then I was thinking well, I could buy a couple and use one to backup some music and video on my laptop incase the HD ever died.

If you want to back up video/music, buy an external harddrive.  Flash can't compete when you look at capacity/cost.  1TB externals were under $100 last I checked.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010170522&bop=And&ShowDeactivatedMark=False&ActiveSearchResult=True&Order=PRICE just go down that list and pick a size/price you want.  You may find the same stuff cheaper somewhere else, I just stick with them since I know the customer service is great and I get my shit in 1-2 days from when I order (memphis > huntsville > my home)

wat, that data traveler 128 gig is supposedly close to $1000 new?
http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-DataTraveler-200-Flash-Drive/dp/B002DT4PUW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1264031902&sr=1-1

Er, well it's $400 new there.

List price is typically the price it originally sold at...so after a week or two passes and tech loses value, price for wholesalers drops but they still show you the "list price."

They're not selling it at a $600 loss :P

list price is not what they sold for.
it's just like MSRP

My point is it was the original price the manufacturer sold/suggested/whatever that doesn't get updated as the technology becomes cheaper.  A lot of places do that to make you think you're getting a damn good deal...

Pentium 2
List Price $1299.99
NOW ONLY $0.02!!!11

i should have quoted t_cel since i it was his post i was referring to.
in agreement with you.

Ah, just goes to show how ridiculous it is to try and stay on the 'cutting edge.'  Prices drop too fast.  Stick with mid-range shit that's a good value.

For music/video backups, get a beefy external drive.  For documents and pictures and such, stick with 2-8gb.

PortableApps.com has some really nice applications you can install on your thumbdrive.  I have KeePass to store/generate passwords for various things, Firefox so I can carry my favorites with me and always have the same tabs open no matter what PC I use, portable MS Office (you'll need to get this from torrents), portable Photoshop CS3 (I think it was 60mb, also from a torrent site), portable Thunderbird...etc.

I looked all through your link, but I'm having hell finding what I want.

Say I just want an external hard drive. Not just an enclosure, (which is like 3/4 of the ones i'm finding...). External hard drive, 40GB would be plenty, and a beefy one sounds good. If it's portable, I'll just use it instead of getting a thumb drive. Can you link me to a couple good ones?

40GB is tiny. You might as well get a 120GB, they are cheap.

That link was for thumbdrives...these are about the size of a book, although some are small, none are really pocket sized.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&SubCategory=414&N=2010150414

Just scroll down until you reach a price/size you like.  It's sorted by lowest price.  250gb for $50

One thing you might want to pay attention to is whether they are powered through USB or through their own plug.  The ones that just use USB are a lot slower, but usually more convenient...  The ones that have their own power supply run faster but you'll have to carry around an extra cord with it...

back in 2004 i bought a 512mb SD card it was the highest you could buy at a realistic price.
i paid $125 for it
the other day i got a 4gb SDHC card for $12
i don't think i'll ever buy the 'cutting edge' stuff ever again.
at the time i needed that much room cause i was taking a 2 week trip and i filled it up with photos.
when i bought the 4gig card i was pretty pissed at how much i paid for 1/8th the storage amount 5 years ago.

do they even make external drives that small any more?
newegg 20-80gig external hard drives
all external harddrives

Same thing here. I bought a 128Mb USB thumb drives for 80$ in 2003 or 2004. And a 128Mb MP3 player for 300$ LOL

Ive got a plastic 4 gig Pariot that i got for dirt ass cheap like 3 years ago i think, i have an A-data 2 or 4 gig thats in alum thats sorta small really like it fits in tiny places so i dont have to unplug shit around it and i have a big ass 16 gig a data thtsa cased in rubber.  I make sure to clean them regularly by leaving them in my pants and sending them through the wash and dryer.  None have fucked up they fuckign rock so long as they are formatted out the box.  go ahead and get teh biggest for teh dough.  its nice to carry around a PE, Office, Minii Browser and still have room to back up a My docs folder if i need to.

I can format your shit, back up your pics and leave you with an OS, protection and office 07 with just my 16 gig. USB drive.

worth the 25 i paid for it like last year i think.

The first auction Pat listed has everyone complaining about fake thumbdrives, no positives about thumbdrives.  The second link the guy's sold a pile of the Kingston Datatraveller 128Gb units for $42-110 in the last week with perfect feedback.

I saw a bunch at about the $66 mark, if my $28 one doesn't pan out I will try one of those.

To tell the truth when I started looking today, I was really thinking just about getting a 16gb, as I have come across a couple files that don't fit on my handful of 4gb drives. When I stumbled across the 128gb @ $28 it was more of a wtf that can't be true, so I bought it to find out. Either way I am still looking for one of those multi pack deals but instead of 4gb's like I bought a couple years back 16 gb's this time. The 128gb will be more novelty then anything.

I rock the tiny shit for my keychain. Anything over 1gb will usually be dvd stuff, so I just use my external HDD for that.

fastest - http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12130
cheapest - http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11294

Then just buy a transflash/microSD card. ATm memory is kinda expensive, it was half the price over a year ago.

4gb - http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.19039
2gb - http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.19037

You have to be careful with some thumbdrives, quality sucks, some have issues when removing from PC ("forgets" what was added/deleted), or with plastic units - they'll break off your keychain and be lost forever. I use the 1st linked above, and it's been on my keychain for 2 years solid.

BTW dealextreme is a great website - even more reliable than many US-based ebay'ers. Just don't order anything you need soon...
