My ex's former best friend who ive banged a few time has a 93 civic ex auto.
Whoever had it before her was an idiot and the whole things pretty ghetto.
Doesn't have the stock engine, has a vtec zc.
Anyways, so from what i was told, her mom was driving it and it wanted to die, when it did die, she pulled over and got it jump started, it then died when she put it in reverse. Jumped it again, same thing, died in reverse. Jumped it again, stayed on long enough for her to get half way home, she got a ride the rest of the way.
So she calls me today as i'm leaving my friends asking me to look at it.
I go pick her up and drive to the car, try jumping it, nothing. only had a couple tools in the car, so i checked what i could, has spark, timing belts fine, has fuel going to the filter.
Any ideas?

Wasn't one on and i was in a hurry so i didn't look for something to short out the connector.

Check the source voltage (battery).
Check grounds.
Then check alternator including the belt.

Any other symptoms like turning on the headlight and it dies right away.

Was the spark a blue/white spark or a weak yellow spark?
Were you jumping the vehicle at the same time of checking spark?

So i wasnt going to have time to look at it again until later this week so her mom had it towed to a shop yesterday. Apparently, the shop says it was the spark plugs and there charging her like $2xx, at least this is what she told me. Which seems ridiculous, the one plug i pulled was fine, should have checked the others i guess, but still seems to me like there should be a bigger problem.

Just thought it was weird that it started right up for them with only new plugs.

you didn't say it fixed it, you said they were going to charge her to do that.

i had a 04 civic si that threw a check engine light and died.
code was misfire in #3
dealer put a new coil pack on and it drove fine for 3 days
same thing happened
dealer did the next thing on their list and that fixed it for another 3 days.
after just over a month of this crap, the dealer took the head off and found all kinds of busted shit
ended up with a new engine.

Im pretty sure the engine and transmission were both replaced with  a zc from like a 90ish something or other and look like they have plenty of miles on them., and iirc when i drove it, which was over a month ago when i fixed her sunroof, it shifted pretty crappy, i think the torque converter might be locking up. Or it was only running on a couple cylinders and died out when the idle dropped from going into gear. Dunno though, it was dark and i was trying to fix it in a fredmeyers parking lot. =P

Before they do anything, tell her you'd charge way less than $200 for a plug change and blowjob. I also read that over 90k miles Honda recommends some ATF additive (quick gear or something) to reduce an old autotragic's shift issues.



When you shift out of park, it goes from almost no load to a moderate load (even if you don't hold the brakes and are rolling downhill already). A barely running engine will die as the rpm's drop. Could be a lot of things - very bad valve adjustment, plugged cat, o2 sensor that the ecu can't tell is bad, plugged injector, bad/plugged IACV.

If the shop said the plugs are bad, that may give you an idea where the bigger problem is. If the o2 sensor is reading a rich mixture as too lean, it will be dumping gas and foul the plugs. If the plugs are oily/crusty (but aren't old), it could be really bad rings. A compression test is the number 1 test to try if you get fuel and spark.

FYI a worn cap/rotor/wires will still provide spark, but barely. Regap the plugs way down and see if that helps. If it does, you know whats next on the list to replace.

I told her it was a ridiculous price for some spark plugs, as for the blow job, already received.
Unfortunately someone broke her windshield right before it broke down so its sitting at the shop until its replaced, so until that's fixed i wont have a chance to look at the car. Ive replaced a couple automatic honda transmissions and though its not something id like to do again, it was fairly easy. But from what shes told me, the shop says all it needed was plugs and its working fine.

Wifes CRV started acting up one day. It was idling way to low. CEL came on and then it died at the light.

turned it on stomped on the gas and pulled into a parking lot. checked all the sensors and disconnected the battery the fan came on and it died. I cranked it over and over and over again and finally it started.

I Put it in drive and it was gasping to stay alive and died.

I adjusted the throttle cable to stay open a bit and that did the trick, although it was upshifting and downshifting like shit.

Finallly i got home and removed the IAC valve and cleaned it with some carb cleaner, readjusted the throttle cable back to stock and the bitch started right up at a steady 750rpm.
