Any SEO or eCommerce Nogs on Here?
« on: March 09, 2010, 10:39:51 PM »

I need something done.  Custom scripting.   I need a designer and a custom programmer.  I need a customized template/look.  I also need custom programming done in the product page and checkout process.  There is no real deadline, but I'm looking to have the site launch in 4-6 weeks.

The budget is pretty decent, but not excellent.  If you are interested in learning more or know someone that is good at this type of work, let me know.  Again, I'm not looking for hacked together crap and dealing with some flake.

I agree.  None of them want to do anything.  They are the experts, but they want you to tell them exactly how you want it.  Once you do that, they say "ok, pay me and I'll do it."  You ask for any type of sample or proof before giving them money and they basically tell you no.  God forbid someone spend 3 hours making an example so you can get some sample before you hand $3000.

I found one local woman that isn't, but she wants a TON of money for SEO and a moderate amount of the design/programming work.  She's quoting that for me to get high on google, it's 3 months at $750/month for her to go in and do SEO.  To me, that's a large sum of money.  It also isn't a guaranteed service so even after she does that, I might still be on page 4.

If I could use an out of the box install of Zencart, OsCommerce or any of the other options, I would.  I need custom features done.  It's not an option otherwise.

I can do programming, I made this website www.cinebox.net from scratch and I'm working on another one with custom programming in Joomla.

What do you want exactly?

You have to see the other side too.  A lot of people that do some work beforehand ends up being a big waste of time.  Designing isn't exactly something you can quickly whip up.

For SEO, it'd be a pain, but I'd just read up on how to build it yourself.  Advertising at other highly ranked sites usually helps, depending on how they handle them, and if there's any content you can put on your site to draw traffic that helps.  A lot of the "cheap" SEO solutions use methods that Google frowneth upon and will end up being a waste of time/money, so I'd be very careful.

Flat rate or nothing.  I'd never pay hourly for a service like this.

I know.  I've caught about 10 people putting websites on their page that they are no longer affiliated with.  It's impossible to tell what these random people have or have not done.  Just because they link to a website it doesn't mean anything.  I even email the owners and sometimes they respond, sometimes they don't, sometimes they don't know.  Overall, it's a two way street.  They should be willing to work with you to prove they aren't worthless.  If they aren't willing to do a little work to get the job, I can't work with them.  95% of the people won't put a damn thing in writing.  So essentially they don't want to show what they can do, and they don't want to commit in writing, what they will do.  Shady business.

As for SEO, I don't want to get involved.  $2250 just sounds a bit steep for SEO.  I might outsource that job to India.  I have a contact there that does website stuff.  I just don't trust them to do a good job with the actual design/aesthetics.  I would trust them to do SEO crap.

Scope creep is the exact reason people want to know everything you want when making a site.  They quote you a price based on your vague description, then add more and more crap which ends up taking up a shitton more time.

I have a friend that does web-dev professionally for a company, but they only deal with huge clients...  I'm sure he'd be more than interested in doing the coding, and he's more than capable, but design isn't something he's skilled with :P

Take RS up on his offer.

As for now I can't put a price on this vague description. I charged 900$ for a complete website and I think I'll be done with it in 2 weeks. It gives me ~20$/hour.

I was paid 13$/hour to make Cinebox.

Btw, I'm in software engineering.

I'm sure there are going to be changes as we go along.  I can only think of so much as we go along.  It's up to the developer to decide whether it matters or not.  If I ask for a radio button and you want to charge $500, then I'll tell the guy to fuck off.  If I want a whole new procedure, obviously it will cost.  It's also up to the developer to expect some changes in their bid.  This is why mechanics charge 4 hours for a 2 hour job.  If it does take 4 hours, they aren't fucked.  I'm not interested in taking advantage of anyone but I'm also not interested in working with some immovable force that turns and says "sorry, that's another $500" to every and any change.  There is a happy medium.

CDN or USD?  Either way, I'm above that value in my bid and this is without the designer adding the products.  I'll be doing all of the adding of the products and their descriptions.

what SEO stuff do you want done? all those carts are designed with SEO already in mind. i bet there isn't much to do be done on top of it.

I'll post a web link to the PDF I'm making.  I'm about 1 hour away from it being done.  I planned on using ZenCart most likely.  That or osCommerce but I believe ZenCart is easier to use for custom programming.

I know they come with SEO in mind, but there is the grunt work of adding the business to directories and getting it attached to legit sites.  From my limited knowledge of SEO, that helps quite a bit.

You're drawing a hard line bignig, and I commend you. Keep it up.

I just wish everything was as easy as webs.com like the website for my baseball team, but business demands a little more than that. All I fucking want is what I have, yet easily editable. In web-boy world, that's impossible.  ::)

zencart is pretty nice, oscommerce has a shitton of expandability but configuration can be a bit of a pain for novices.  I like ubercart but it's a bit limited.

i'll build you a CMS app from the ground up so you could edit all aspects of the site from the webpage itself

why do you want a developer to "add your business to directories" what does that even mean? you want your business listed on spam pages?

I didn't get a chance to read it over again so I may have some things I'm going to want to clarify, add, or address, but it should be pretty close to what I'm going to need.

I never said I wanted a custom template.  I said I wanted a custom template and custom programming.  Read nig nog.

I have a few people interested.  The way I figure it, $2750 is 4 weeks of work which is almost $700 a week.  It's really not that terrible but it's not great.  With that said, I'm not looking for fantastic.  I'm looking for relatively basic features.

If I don't have a full launch on May 1, I can't launch until July.  From mid May to the end of June, we are too busy to troubleshoot issues with the site.  I need something in April so I can have a couple of weeks to ad products so it's ready for the busy season.  I want the site live in May/June so I can pick up some business during the busiest time of the year.

I sent him an email. He is a good programmer he did a couple of website. I'm more familiar with SEO and design than him so I would do those parts...

Btw, your PDF doesn't talk about Administration of the website. It's almost half the work in certain case, so it's not negligible information to know.

Administration?  You mean adding the products and content?  If so, I'm doing that.  If I run into any issues as far as technical stuff, that's where you come in for basic support.
