Driving down the interstate a few hours ago with my brother in law in my hummer and all of a sudden i get cherries behind me.

me: heres my license and insurance, I haven't registered it yet

cop: well john, can I have you step out of the vehicle

I get out and we walk around to the back of my car

cop: in the state of north dakota failure to register a motor vehicle within the 30 day grace period after purchasing it is a misdemeanor so we have two options, I can give you a court summons and let you head on your way or I can arrest you , so I'm going to need you to turn around and place your hands on the hood of my car.

Bonded out for $400, court on the 5th with up to $1000 fine, and now I gotta go register/pay taxes on this fucker on monday

Oh well, I made it 6 months without paying it. Try to put off spending a few bucks and now it's going to cost me double.  Live and learn i guess.

That's why I rock a bill of sale in the car within 20days. When it runs out just print out another one with the new date. I drove my EK hatch for a year without ever getting pulled over with no tag. Sold the bitch and never registered it in my name. Drove the EM1 for about 6 months and got pulled over like 3 times, all doing under the speed limit. Fucker stood out like a "oh hey, pull me over". Never registered it either. Drove the CRX for 3 months or so without registering it also.

I hate paying vehicle tax as much as I change cars. When I do I usually just tell them to leave it blank and put like $500 as the price. The Teg has been going on a month and a half, no registration either. I do/did have insurance on all of them, I'm just too lazy to stand down at the DMZ for an hr+ to get my tag.

How is it only $100? Considering he hasn't registered it in his name he has to pay a certain % of the purchase price for taxes.

I just licensed and registered a "$3000" vehicle and I believe it was $316.50 all said and done.  DMV did suck though.


I've driven around a week or so with no tags and extra plates I have, but never much more than that.  Cars are always insured.  I also keep the bill of sale and title in the car during that time to show I just bought the car.  In NJ, I don't think there is any grace period.  You cannot drive an unregistered car, period.

actually WI is $69 for the title, $75 per year for registration, i believe $49 for plates, and 5.5% sales tax on purchase price.

The one I remember, I got for $50, put $25 in parts on it, ran it for a year, and sold it in a day for $250. Only 'lost' money on gas/insurance. Asside from the broken strut bearing it came with and shitty external stereo amp, that ford probe was pretty damn reliable. The free accord was more fun though. I don't think I reg'd that one though.

You can't control what some sellers do. Some people insist on filling it out for the purchase price.

S2k cost me fucking $218 to register in NC. they do stop at $150, but shit. I paid taxes when I bought it in Louisiana, so why in the fuck do I have to pay it again? Our old clapped out civic beater cost $165. I'm thinking of junking my shitbox '91 s-10 just to avoid the title fees. i know we have nice roads here because of it, but registering a car shouldn't cause a financial dilemma.

same here, i think the whole idea is they figure most people will be like hmmm im gonna drive this unregistered car but since ill get in more trouble using fake plates ill just run none, so now since its illegal to run a car without a tag the cops automatically pull over a non plated car. its a double edged sword really.

to the people saying that I didn't take option #1 he didn't say I (the criminal) had two options he said that he (the 35 year veteran of the highway patrol-I know this cause we bullshitted all the way to the jail) had two options, he made the decision for me.


As far as not being able to afford the registration, it isn't that at all.  It's 1-laziness 2-not wanting to go and hang out at the DMV, 3-laziness, 4-not wanting to pay the title transfer fee, registration, taxes, etc ($1500), 5-laziness, 6-all of these taxes I pay are supposed to go to taking care of the roads and you can ask matt (turbob16hatch) the roads here are terrible, the plows don't come out until 2-3 days after a blizzard, and personally in the two years I've been in my house the plows have never ONCE done my road, so I personally don't see a point in paying for shit that doesn't actually get done.  So when it comes down to it, did I break the law-absolutely, did I know I could get thrown in jail for it-nope, am I a lazy cheap ass-yep, lesson learned-absolutely.
