How hot is too hot? ECT/IAT/Oil Temp etc...
« on: April 20, 2010, 11:20:45 AM »

So I took my car on a longer drive then normal sunday, it was about 72 degrees out.  My question is how hot is too hot for things like oil temp ect iat.  My tunerview showed ECT's of 210-215 at times, oil temp showed 250+ and IAT's were 100f+ at times.  The oil temp sensor is right in the sandwich plate on the back of the block, I've heard it should be in the pan which could be why the numbers are so high.

Setup is a stock bottom ls/vtec
Royal purple 10w30
Ebay I/C
Ebay Radiator/fan

what worries me is that it was only 70 degrees out, what will it be like when its 90degrees!? And the fact that the car was tuned in 40degree weather and iat's were about 45degrees then.

I think every car is a little different, my srt-4 used to run 220ish ECT stock, but if my honda got that high I'd shut if off, the only thing that would really concern me is your oil temp is way high.

Coolant temp seems pretty high, do you know what temp thermostat is in it? I'm rocking an ebay intercooler, rad/fan and I never really see above 190 for ECT, and when its 65deg. outside my iat's are really never over 75 unless I look back at the logs durring a pull they will climp slightly. This weekend I put some cardboard over my IC to do some testing with a water injection setup and at 65 outside air temp It took some beating to get the iat's to 100 without the water injection on. The first pull we sprayed the water/meth the iat dropped right down to 70. I've never had an oil temp guage but 250 seems really high even for the back of the block.

You can also use an old skool hot rodder trick and drill 2 to 4 1/8" holes in the thermostat near the center body part no overheating.

I do this and run straight distilled water in cooling add some antifreeze when it gets a little colder. ;D

R u running a fan shroud? If not, you need one. Build one out of sheet metal or whatever. I did that for mine, put a 170* thermostat, and used a jumper on the fan switch so when the car is on, so is the fan. Also get a better fan that will actually move some air, if yours is just some shitty ebay one. Not all ebay fans are bad.

Did all of these things to mine. When i cruse down the freeway here in the NW, on a 70* day my temps log in at 170-190. (Mostly 175*-178*)And my temp gauge that I have mounted b4 the radiator is saying right around 200* In town in stop and go I log 190* and my gauge b4 the radiator says 215*

No I'm not, the egay fan has a slight shroud to it but probably not good enough.  I think I will just jump the fan switch also and see what happens.

Dunno what thermostat it is, think ill just buy a new one that is low temp and try it out.  Id rather not do the drill holes thing, I've done that before and in the Washington winters it is a bitch to get the car warm.

Thanks for the help guys. Gave me some ideas

some cars are ok with holes some are not, its more about the time that the water is in the radiator then it is the volume going through it. you can run 250 degree water through your block all day and its never going to get to 200.

will distilled water and water wetter still fuck up the water pump? or is there anti rust shit in the water wetter?

There is water wetters that have rust inhibitors in it.

And if you do routine coolant flushing then you should have little issues.

Most good water pumps use stainless steel impellers or a some kind of plated steel impellers.

You have bigger worries of over spinning water pumps over 8k rpms and experiencing cavitation. :?:

what happen to your bumper? spoon lip is back? .....so is the veilside? :-X

but damn! that is one clean ass setup there Andy!!  :noel:

on subject tho. i had a wastegate super close to my radiator before, i do seem to recall coolant temps creeping a little, but i think only to the 200* range. stock eg radiator with a ebay fan un-shrouded. in my CX with a ebay aluminum and stock fan, Dave said he never seen the coolant temps above like 170* even after repeated pulls (same on a buddies car). wanna say it was like a humid 65* day.

i vote shrouded fan and jumpering the fan switch on hot days (i always did that in my turbo and B20 hatch)

your radiator is blocked by the front bumper innercooler and hood. I'd drill some holes in the bumper in the little area between the actual bumper area and the hood. like I did on my crx. after I did that my ects are at a steady 175. Radiators have a hard time working if they don't get fresh air running through them.

damn, 170? way lower then my shit.  Thanks, yeah bought a new lip, and a new oem bumper since my old one was hacked to shit due to DIY i/c piping and side exit d/p.  Its getting painted right now.

I take it you got the wagon's alt fixed? sorry I didn't make it to your work with it, I was busy as fuck.

will do

I'm gonna build a shroud, put the fan on a switch put a lower temp thermostat in it and run water wetter once I get it back from paint.

Thanks for your help fellas

Ebay Radiator/fan

Problem identified.

Ebay fans push 1/10th of what they claim. Go to hater-tech and look up that big fan thread for the high-speed SPAL fan vid, it sounds and flows like a turbo prop airplane. I still have the stock 1-core rad and stock fan, and I've never seen it go above 200F. In fact, it only went to 185F on the dyno between runs, and DOWN to 175F during the pulls. It also helps my entire topmount's DP is wrapped, along with the upwards section and part of the runners.

Cruising IAT's aren't something you should worry about if you're using the stock sensor in the manifold. I recall seeing 130F+ IAT's on my d15 with a z6 IM after it was idling for 10 mins.

As for oil, oil will break down at extended periods above 260F. 240F is about the right operating temp for most Hondas w/o stock oil coolers.
