Solid Laptop under $500
« on: June 10, 2010, 08:44:59 PM »

My wifes HP DV6000 has shit the bed, and I need to get her something to replace it. After this I will never own another HP, what a piece of junk. I have a Dell d630, that seems to be alright, but wanted to here what other people have had for experiences.

Things it will be used for:

-School work, she is a business admin student. (ms office, things like that)
-E-mail, facebook, msn, internet.
-Watching movies, not our primary source, but sometimes when she wants to watch something other then what I am watching she plays it on her laptop. As such Netbooks are out.

-She INSISTS on having something with a full number pad, as she hates using the numbers on the top.
-Under $500
-No HP

The new Dell inspirons are pretty nice. Got one with a Core i3, 4 gigs of ram and 500 GB hard drive for about $500 on sale.

Dell inspirions are crap, I had a 6400 and i dropped it off my bed once and the hard drive crashed.  One fucking fall and it breaks.  My lenovo t500 has been dropped off my bed 10+ times and nothing ever happened. The lenovo has something in it that senses when its falling and it shuts the hard drive off in mid fall to protect it, it also has drain holes on the bottom of the computer for if you ever spill anythign on it.  JD says its the best computer and I really like it.  Go with a lenovo.

I had one, i bought it probably 2-3 years ago? it lasted about a year, the battery shit the bed twice and the charger once, the keyboard fucked up and i had to get a new one, but it was covered under warranty.   The screen started getting dead pixels, eventually it had a bunch of dead pixels and then whole rows started dying, in the end i had about 4 dead horizontal rows and 5 dead vertical rows.  I'd stay far away from dell's crappy laptops.   I've had their desktops and they were good for the most part, but the laptop i had was shit, and i found out that many other people had the problems i had too.

Hey morons bitching about your harddrive/ram/videocard/etc breaking...guess what?

HP AND DELL AND TOSHIBA AND [insert laptop mfr] DOESN'T BUILD THOSE COMPONENTS

Thanks.

BTW, I think "enterprise" laptops are your only option for a number pad (in most cases) and they typically cost more for lower specs.

Im a lenovo fanboi.  i asked for laptop suggestions after my dell inspirion6400 broke, and everyone here said that the lenovo t500 is pretty sweet and i really like it.  It takes the beatings like a tied up cotton picker nigger.  Everyone also said that toshitba's weren't bad either.

My old IBM thinkpad is indestructible and has been living the shop life for about 6 years now.

After this HP never again. 2 hard drives in the first 6 months, 1 more in the first year, two batteries and two power supplies, all in 2 years of owning it.

Similar spec Gateway.  I have one with a better processor and I'd say it's worth $500.

I like my Dell Studio 1737 a lot.  It was about $600, but its so much nicer than having a 15 inch notebook.  Screen's been great, keyboard is great.  Trackpad is mediocre because I have shitty linux drivers on it.

Great way to get more enjoyment out of the machine:  The first time it boots up, get rid of as much shit as possible.  Preferably just format the drive and install a non OEM windows copy that won't have bloatware on it.

My toshiba is 5 years old and has given me no trouble. I'm sure the quality of the newer ones has gone downhill like everything else though.

This single bit of advice will make any store-bought PC run so much faster.

The people that claim Windows is slow out the box are the ones with either a very shitty computer and/or they bought one from a store that comes preloaded with AIDS and arthiritis.

This

Also Dells suck unless you are getting higher end stuff.  the lower tends to be full of bottom of the barrel China Mother board parts, although same can be said for most of them, i tend to see lots of MB failures and component failures with Dell's.  If i were to buy one today id either pick up an IBM or an HP.  Again starting with at least middle of the road as far as specs.

Acers aren't too bad, the older gateways wern't so bad either, not sure about the new stuff.

Bottom line is all of them are going to use cheap ass china bullshit for their lower end PC's\Laptops, i personally hate Dell cause well their shit fucks up alot.
