OBX LSD rebuild
« on: June 20, 2010, 06:01:05 PM »

1-Dissemble the LSD 9 bolts holding the top, and remove the guts! try and keep it organized but it only goes back one way if you think about it logically

here is the stock lower and upper case, its in pretty rough shape from china

2- bust out your dremell with a 60 grit sanding wheel and smooth out the edges and potential pieces that may break off and float around in the tranny

 * I smoothed the insides and the chamfers a bit and cleaned the cases from dust

3- The lower axle or "sun" gear is the taller one

put it into the lower case chamfored side DOWN, just think the axle has to slide in so it makes it easier :D

4-next come the 5 outer or "planetary" gears, if you mixed them up dont worry 5 are cut one direction and 5 the opposite, only the correct 5 will fit

5-Lower in the center gear that retains the washers

6- The two washer retaining gears were identical upper and lower on this LSD, install the lower one with the flat side DOWN and the notches side UP so they can retain the washers in the center

7- the washer order I went with )()()(

8-center them up using whatever you have around that the same diamater, my 1/2 extension worked

9-put on the upper washer retaining gear on above the washers with the notch DOWN and the flat side UP, also add the remaining outer planetary gears

10-the other axle gear (shorter one) chamfored side UP and notched DOWN

11-line up the upper case half like so

12-tighten the upper case hand tight in a star pattern

13- TQ to 35ft/lbs

14- PRAY for good runout and case fit :D

LMK what you nogs think

I would have chased all the bolt holes with a tap too. Lmk how this works out for you. Chuck it up in a path to check your run out, or put it in 1/2 of a grand case with a bearing and check runout.

$725 with bearings shipped to your door.

Last week I saw a Quaife/TRD that broke the case with 350 whp/300 wtq, these units were beefier than our Honda POS.

The one I installed

ground the bolts down so they fit :P

now to put the rest of it all on. . . still reading on how to pull the old bearings of the stock diff

also the bolt holes SUCK on the obx as expected. but strange thing is I would put the bolt in from the back just to make sure the threads are clean and it would go in easy, but from the front they are much harder to put it

Wow.

Not to seem disrespectful to the time/effort you put into the thread, but the machining looks like shit on those things.

I'll save my money for a Quaife.

Don't mind him, he just wants to see the dicks not the holes.

What bone does'nt realize is that most motors people build themselves here won't need more than 500 miles for a tranny. They blow up before the tranny is trashed. Look at HHH.

MFactory.......$300 cheaper and better chance of the replacement parts IF ever needed being in stock.

When you split a Quaife with 300 whp and they won't honor the "lifetime" warranty.......

Warranty is only good if you have an "authorized" installer put it in though, most people overlook that.

Socket + adapter sits on the axle tube. I have a 3 jaw puller for the ring gear side bearing.

your cooler should look like this

not cold enough.

When garage is 110 a unit like that MIGHT keep the beer at 45 degrees plus it will be adding heat to the garage.

Nope, put beer in freezer until slushy, put in cooler with ice pack. Then either piss off the deck or when out of beer go inside for more.

I'd rather have a wavetrac over a OBX and OBX over mfactory....just based on what I've seen.
