could this gismo work to control some valves opening and closing at 1ms or less?

http://arduino.cc/en/Reference/DelayMicroseconds

this will work by flashing the LEDs to make them appear dimmer without your eye actually being able to tell it's flashing.

so it's PWM

I suppose, I'm a hardware n00b.

It has 70 digital input/output pins (of which 14 can be used as PWM outputs)

Says only 14 are official PWM outputs but I don't see why the code wouldn't work on any of the digital ports so I guess it's more of a hacky-PWM.  Right now the code only delays between flashing the LED on, and could probably get better results from delaying how long it's ON as well as how long it's OFF...but I don't actually need that for anything so moved on.

PWM would probably refer to much higher frequency. All you need is >100Hz to fool the human eye. Even 30Hz can be enough, and that's ~16ms per on or off period, assuming 50% duty cycle. FYI an LED on half the tiem isn't preceived at half brightness. I forgot which it's expotential or inversely so, but the human eye doesn't see light intensity linearly.

Yep the max delay I have set is 30ms which should give roughly 33fps which I assume will be enough to not be detectable, but will see once I get the hardware.

Oh, coupon code for half off on the launchpads - HALFMSPTOOL

$2.15 shipped each, which is ridiculously cheap.  Wouldn't let me order more than three.

Did it work for you?  I used it this morning with success.  Tried again tonight, even without logging in, and it said the coupon was expired.

Found the perfect component for detecting the drops.  Found out about optical interrupters and bought a couple Sharp-manufactured ones with a 10mm gap (which should be more than plenty) and a 1-5 microsecond response rate.

Any specific plans with them?

I'm using the Seeeduino for one of these with some extra "features":
time fountain 2

Then wanna build one of these:
Spinning RGB LED Ball II

Both pointless, but good trip toys.

Will probably use one of the Launchpad boards to build something that'll occasionally ping an address through my router, and if it doesn't get a response (aka connection is fucked) it will power cycle the router and modem.  I'm too cheap to buy another and figure it'd be good experience if anything...

The other boards, not so sure yet...

On backorder :(

Of course :P

They actually said that on the page for the launchpad in red lettering.  $2-4 for a programmable board with free shipping, it isn't surprising.

Should get my Seeeduino today  ;D
