DIY engine torque damper

I haven't made one of these yet, but it seems really easy so I probably will so I can eliminate the front motor mount to make room for future turbo/downpipe.

Basically using a cheap rear coilover shock from a mountain bike as an engine torque damper.



What I think is pretty cool is that the threaded sleeve would allow you to have some preload to stiffen things up.

cool idea. but i think those shocks are supper soft.

The one the guy on the integra forum used had like a 750lb/in spring in it or something.  If you preload it, you could probably get a decently stiff brace.  The rear suspension of a mountian bike is made to have 200lb guys jumping up and down on it, and landing on it and shit without bottoming out.

I bet its still stiffer than my mounts are right now.

Depends on the distance from the rotational axis, and besides it's not the shock whose stiffness we care about.

I am about to make the same thing for my EG , but going to use the trunk life from an MK4 Jetta. It's both aluminum and quite strong. I measure it at 3000 Nm per MzH.

that combined with a princess auto Heimy joint on 1 side ($5) should do the trick.

Fox shock on Ebay is like $10 for a 650 Lb / in unit.  These won't function the same was as they do in a mountian bike, the operating range is much smaller , esp. when combined with stiffer engine mounts.

Not sure which method to try now.

the cheap ones are made for kids to ride and think they are cool downhill mountain bikers, the good ones are not cheap.
the ones made for a 200 lb dude to toss him self off big drops and not bottom out are in the few hundred dollar range

can these be found at the dollar store

Small hydraulic piston, stainless line, acumulator with 3000lb spring & plugged outlet. Win.









Fuck, I meant that as a joke but that's a bitchin idea. Maybe not easy to get cheap parts for, but still.

From the looks of the thread, you want some sort of internal dampening, with not so much spring rate. Check out the last posts though. The guy is using 1/16" brackets, 1 bolt way off on the end, and isn't even aligned to dampen the proper movement.
