I have been reading a lot lately about engine building for the d-series motor. I acquired a helm's manual too for my civic. There are still little ends and oddball questions that I haven't found the answer to. I was thinking the more experience engine builders on this forum can write a how-to guide for the rest.

A tear-down and re-build guide would be nice.  It's not hard to figure it out, but it's nice to have everything spoon-fed 

I didn't consider all the little odds and ends and it has ultimately cost me much more than I expected.

Those are pretty cool videos and almost has me considering building it myself.  I just don't have the tools and don't really like numbers that fluctuate (like measuring the cylinders).  I like stuff to be exact, so measuring that would just piss me off.

SO do what I did. Buy pistons that are .5mm over have a shop bore/hone, balance/blueprint, gap the rings, deck the block and wash it. Out the door for all the machine work it was $315 with tax. Assemble it and use the bearing codes to get the correct bearings and you are good to go.

I had my z6 block bore, honed and decked/milled for free at work.

I'm doing the assembling including ring gapping, notching the block, oil pump porting. ;D

Good book for a first time engine builder. I don't agree with everything they say, but overall, it's a good read.

Don't think that includes balancing, will have to ask.  They are the shop that most other "performance shops" take their machine work to.  Found out the one everyone recommended that wants $600 gets their work done there.

There is a really good machine shop here in town that most of the racers go to from my local track, and my moms cousin works there, and those dicks quoted me 850 for .5mm overbore, hone, clean, and assemble bottom end, no deck, no balance. That sucks when some are paying 350 and dont have family working there, plus i work at a driveshaft shop and i personally put labour into building 2 shafts for their car that i didnt get paid for cause it was sponsorship from my work and i was said sure ill help them out

Yeah, but it takes the right tools and the knowledge on how to use them properly. And if you're building an engine for boost, then you will not build it "to spec" per se. A machinist with a racing background will know what side of the allowable clearances to error to, and which ones to change to make the motor better suited for boost. It's not rocket science, but it's not just turning wrenches either.

Yeah, sorry, for the cost of this swap I'm not going to let it be my first engine assembly.  Also I don't have the tools.  I could probably buy them for the cost of someone else doing the work, but, I'd rather leave it to someone with a little more experience.
