What type of manual tranny fluid do you use?
« on: April 29, 2009, 12:27:36 PM »

Seeing as I've been using Honda MTF for the past few years I decided to give cheap 10W30 motor oil a shot this time I changed axles because it's so much cheaper. So far so good, I don't really notice any difference.

What do you guys run? Post up if you use some other fluid I didn't mention.

Use Royal Purpe 10W-30 in the ZC CRX, and Castol EDGE 10W-30 in the del sol.
Just spend the extra money on quality synthetic oils.
Shifting became easier and smoother with synthetic oils.

I've always used cheap 10w30 until last year. I wanted to switch to a better oil, just to see if there would be a difference. I bought a quart of Amsoil MTF synchromesh, and I had 1 quart of Acura MTF laying around. I used that, plus some 10w30 as well since my F trans takes 2.5.

Shit felt pretty damn good compared to straight 10w30. Not sure what did it tho, lol.

I have always used 10w30 and whatever oil was on sale. Just change the fluid more often maybe once a year.

OEM geared boxes  -- GM Syncromesh with friction modifier... Its not going to FIX a fucked up box, but definately helps with trannys that have slight grinding issues due to syncro/slider issues.

Straightcuts -- REDLINE  LIghtweight shockproof (Blue boogersnot)

Hey Bone, i have a couple questions regardng any experience YOU have had with the redline bearsnot... I havent had a trans last this long nor be abused as hard in the car since I built it so Im not exactly sure how often i should change the straightcuts' fluid... Thinking of putting a cooler on it too with a pump and like a motorcycle oil cooler too help keep temps down as Ive been raping the SHIT out of it... HARD and regularly.

Anyways,  Can you PM me your number so I can pick your brain on a couple maintanance thoughts.

I've never used bearsnot myself, it is a bitch to clean up though, clings to everything.

Only Honda tranny I've seen need a cooler was a H22 road race tranny, 1/2 way thru a race is would get balky, tranny cooler fixed it.

Suck out the drain bolt, fill back in via reverse switch location IF it is on top. Dunno how it would work on a Bseries though.

10w30 in open trannys, non synthetic!!!!!!
Pennzoil in LSD trannys, add 1/3 tube of posi additive IF you have a clutch style and can't deal with the chatter.

Synchros are just brake pads, think about that when you choose to run a oil that is slicker.

H series.. Ya I drain through bottom and fill through VSS...

And indeed that shit is a MOTHERFUCKER to clean up... Fragged gears and metal shavings reallyu dont like to sepparate from its gooness.  :O)

Nice thing this time around is that I have abojut 1500 severely beaten miles on it and its still alive... I was just wondering what you were thinking the shit might be good for before it needs to be serviced being beaten at abovethe 650whp level (i was thinking that the viscosity might get fucked with due to absorbing shock and friction..,..)... I havent had to think about it till now as its never lasted this long. It appears Saenz actually got me rolling correctly this time around.

I change the engine oil and filter every 15-17K whether it needs it or not. I did change the diff oil at 130k though cause it wasn't looking new like the trans fluid did.

i have a JDM 97 ITR tranny, and have always run Honda MTF...

LSD = Pennzoil Synchromesh, but it can thin out from the heat.

I'm looking to try the Torco stuff soon.

If the gear oil worked well when warm try the redline lightwiieght shockproof shit. It has the viscosity of a 30 weightm but is super good at dispersing shoick load and     shifts well on oem honda syncroes.
