Quick spool valve, got it working!
« on: May 24, 2009, 01:31:26 AM »

So, I dont quite understand what happened between this site and hmt, but I figured since this is the REALhmt, I'll start my thread over.

Durring the winter I made this quick spool valve. Cost me nothing, I used shit I had at home, had an old wg I could use the actuator off of. It was really simple to do.

And so guys know, this is not how I left it. Somebody mentioned I'm a fucken idiot for only doing a couple little spot welds, but no, I actually welded right along the flapper.

I just BARELY clear the water pump studs. I could chop them off, but fuck it.

Cars all back together, engine is a mess as usual. I tried to clean it up, I guess I like clutter.

And the verdict is it works really well! That actuator had a 4psi spring in it, and it wouldn't open, so I tried another extension spring on the linkage and it was still too strong and opening late.
I was running it with no spring at all and it actually worked alright, the vacuum kept it closed and then as soon as the turbo started to spool up it would open the flapper, but you could tell it was too fast. The turbo starts to boost immediately then you can hear it back off for half a second, then it gets going again.

So what seems to be working the best since I dont have a nice weak extension spring to try, is a knock off bleed style boost controller. It slows the boost signal going to the actuator and keeps it closed longer, I still have to play around with it a bit. But fuck, it works pretty good!

I will rip my turbo off soon though just to make sure this little pos flapper isn't melting.

A cool bit is how the exhaust sounds when it opens, it changes tones very noticeably when it opens. Sounds really cool.

i've got an idea to incorporate this right into a manifold.  i'll have to draw something up when i get a chance.

Can you just make 1" adapter plates that you talked about before with all this shit built in? That would sell pretty good on HMT cause everyone would buy a big fucking holset. Really, I need one. Tires of having boost at 5000 on 7000rpm redline.

Me too!!! I'm actually working on some stuff right now. I've made three different version of a quick spool valve. I'll be using one on my single cam hx35 build hopefully soon.

i just haven't had time to make something quite yet.  the idea is there, just no time to make it.  i've got a manifold to build for a pulsar gti-r, then a ramhorn/dp setup and the car i'm sponsoring has to be ready for the race on sunday. (manifold, dp, charge piping and intercooler).

i need to clone myself. :P

Have you tried a simple MBC, such as the DIY style? Just 2 nipples, ball, spring, bolt/nut, and tiny bleed hole -- or even the "grainger" style.

If you combined that with the correct pre-load, you should be able to adjust it like a normal wastegate w/MBC on it. You could make the pre-load adjustable by replacing the single rod with 2 threaded rods w/coupler in middle for adjustment.

Does much leak past those shafts? how much clearance did you make between the shaft and the housing? It came out great :)
