Trans Question/ Just tore into it what do you guys think?
« on: June 09, 2009, 09:57:03 PM »

Dammit.  My third gear is grinding.  What can i expect to get raped for by a shop to get the synch fixed?
I bled the clutch, adjusted the pedal and changed the fluid and it's still grinding.

I've yet to see a Honda synchro go bad.  Why do people continue to think it's a synchro problem?

It must be an internet virus...every search i did kept pointing to synchro...

It shifts fine until i rev past 5,000 then it catches when going into gear.

To make it right to my spec, your looking at $400 + shipping, I might get it cheaper if I can get a parts breakdown from Honda or Synchrotech.

5g 3-4 hub and slider kit is $233, $50 for ISB and seals. etc.

I might have a source for just 5g 3-4 hub and slider, which is a upgrade in 6g trannys, but 3-4 fork needs modified to work right.

Send the transmission to Bone, and you won't ever look back.

Ill quote famous dan phan

Its a d series buy a new one

There is no quick fix and syncrhos dont go bad. I have never seen any and Mr. Phan who builds these more than anyone else in history said he has seen one bad one

If your looking to rebuild crttaz prices are very fair. The reality of finiding perfect used transmissions is slim especially if you drive the car hard. All it really takes it 2-3 bad hard shifts/grinds on old transmissions to get the lovely higher rpm grindage action

This stuff isnt new and only getting older. if you want to do it right spend the money with crttaz. If you need used transmissions come to me I always have a d16z6 unit around the shop. i also inspect all of them now so if it grinds when it gets to you its not the transmissions that is your problem.

Only shit that USUALLY EVER wears are the teeth on the selector sleeves.

Ive seen a few 5th and second syncros (H/F stuff) hammered out on the INSIDE to where they bottomed out all the way on the gear (therefore not offering any "stopping" action due to them not being able to grab the cone on the respective gear) causing grinding, but also, havent seen a syncro ring with the teeth hammered to where they are an issue.

Brand new slightly used.

Seriously though don't be afraid to take it apart and look at it yourself. To nerves? TAKE PICTURES!!! It's not that bad and if you have an issue like I once had you could just have some Jacked up shifter bushings or a bent shift linkage from not double checking your shit before you pulled the motor

I have had a bad syncro before. Cracked in half from shifting in the water box for a third gear burn out to heat up the auto cross slicks. But thats just a dumb thing to do and it got the best of me that day.

God damn!  Those transmissions are mangled.  I hope mine doesn't look that bad when i pull it apart.

Checked fluid lately?
Yeah i changed it when i started noticing the grind.  I'm rocking Castrol 10w30.  Would synthetic make much of a difference?

Took me 2 months to get to this...

Just tore into the transmission.  The gear sets and synchros look flawless.  I'm going to get a new ISB and seals for it.  What do you guys think?  I can't see anything that looks bad...

Does this look bent?

Time for some tech Q & A

The typical 'grinds going into 3rd at higher rpms' complaint is typically caused by the 3/4 synchro sleeve, correct?  That would be the part that looks like this:

or the correct piece in part #4 here:

My question is, what exactly would one inspect if the above complaint is given?  Is it a clearance issue between two components (i.e. synchro ring and gear) or is it a wear issue with the teeth?

burrs on the hub and slider.....

The slider gets deformed from the engagement teeth on the gear, this in turns causes burrs on the hub, the whole time it is killing the brass synchros.

This is why Honda sells everything as a kit, #4.

If you don't like the price of the kit, it would be like rebuilding a motor and only replacing one rod bearing.

It's gonna come back to bite you in the ass.
