That is correct sir.

Technically the probe is never really needed if you don't mind soldering a tiny bridge between connections. But if you already have the key then you don't have to do any of that.

The lite-on drives they've been using in the Xbox 360's for at least the last year or two require a couple points to be "jumped" on the disc drive in order for you to extract the key.

You need the key to copy into the hacked firmware that lets you play burned games.

The key is unique for every Xbox and if the disc drive's key doesn't match the motherboard's key, it's trash.

there is actually a new lite on out now that you don't need a probe or to jump anything.  super easy to flash.

I don't see MS making it easier to flash them.  They've continued to make it more difficult.

xbox360iso.com has a ton of info about it, and also i just bought a new elite a couple of months ago and it has the new drive in it that I flashed.

just google lite-on 83850c and you will see.
