eBay Turbo Review... Just for reference
« on: October 22, 2009, 12:22:52 PM »

So start of last season, I bought this turbo just to get my car back together for the season. So far, it was put through about 10k on a new motor, saw 10psi within the first 10 miles (same with the motor), was daily driven on 10 psi (about 10k miles on this new turbo/new motor), and saw numberous 20psi highway pulls, burnouts, and track passes.

I made 342/281 on 19ish psi, on my 8:1 static CR DOHC ZC, with a cast mani, and 3 holes in my intercooler. LOL. Oh, and leaking ching chong waste gate and BOV probably put more work on this turbo, than 19psi itself.

I still dont think Ive seen smoke from it (*My car has a slash-cut exhaust tube/crankcase pressure evac, so it smokes regardless. People have said the car smokes when its been idling, and I go to take off, but under normal load, normal driving, or full boost, it doesnt smoke)

Well, I pulled the turbo off today, to see how it is, and to start mocking up a different pipe routing/set-up. To my surprise this bitch is still tight as fuck, ZERO shaft play, and spins like it did when I put it in. I cant fucking believe this 190 dollar shipped to my door piece of shit has made it this far, and is ready for next year!

China is getting their shit together.

For reference, I ordered this turbo from
eBay Seller: CXRacing,
listed as: T3 T4 T04E Turbocharger .63 A/R Turbo CIVIC New Design
specs listed:
Inlet:    3"
Outlet :   2"
Bearing :   Wet Floating Bearings
Oil Inlet :   1/8 NPT Oil Inlet
Flange:   Standard T3/T4 Flange,
Swaps:    350 WHP
Working Pressure: 5~20 PSI
Compressor :.50  A/R Compressor
Turbine: .63 A/R Turbine
Compressor Wheel Exducer: 3"
Inducer: 2"
Turbine Wheel Exducer: 2.2"
Inducer: 2.58"
Hot Side: 5 Bolt Standard Hot Side
Picture of said turbo:

And because Im too lazy to copy this image to my own host, so in case of the original being deleted, this is the turbo with the holes in the compressor inlet, like a Precision design.

Now flame away. Just thought Id share bitches.  O0

I may have spoken too soon... Looks like there is oil on the inside of the compressor housing... Still nothing Im overly concerned about. I will still rock this turbo for next year, and when it goes, I will buy another CDM, just bigger. :)

i have had good luck with Ching Chong turbos under 10psi. above that and they dont seem to last long. i usually get a few months at 15psi. i threw a cheap rebuild kit in my last one that went out and it held up a lot longer. its still good now so i have no idea how much longer it will last. could go tomorrow or could last 10 years, who knows

hotrex is the only one ive seen whos gotten one to fail, i think he wasted 3 of them on his volvo. proof they dont last at 30+psi.

everyone i know who runs them under 15 psi last forever, and i know a bunch of people using them. theres one local who has one thats no lie, 4 years old now and its still in perfect shape and its been on a daily driver the whole time.

My only problem with Holsets is they are large and hard to fit on some cars.  Awesome turbos in all other respects.

You guys must just be getting lucky.  Everybody around here cant get more than 3000 miles out of one, if that. One dude got a few thousand out of an ebay "super t70" and made a tad over 400. Other than him, I cant say I know anyone who has had luck with them.  Although, I have heard good things about the 16g rip offs.

+1. I have a few friends who used them, and they don't last at high boost. One ran a T3/T4 egay special on a 240, it lasted 1 week and it was pouring oil, tons of shaft play, etc. I'll take a used OEM turbo in decent shape over a new china special anytime.

I know of two in action, one of them's been on an 11.5:1 LS with 403 cams for 6-8 months now at the 18 psi (tapering to 12-13 due to internal gate failure).

JD you know what the shaft seal type is on MHI turbos? I've never had one in front of me to rip apart. I can only guess they use a design in those 16g copies that is more suitable to shitty machining jobs vs the dynamic piston ring in a t3/t4 copy. Maybe some sort of carbon seal?

BTW do you nogs know if they actually balanced them, or at least made it look like it? Are there any ground-off notches on either end of the shafts (nuts)? That may be another reason for those 16g copies working.

CDM turbos appear to be balanced. they remove material from the hex head on the turbine side and they are all different from what i have seen. so, they either know enough about turbos that they need to be balanced and can copy very well, or they actually do balance. i cant say which though.

i dont think balance is the issue with them. all of the ones i have had go bad, the thrust plate was what went. i always get in and out shaft play and not up and down

Meh, but the shaft is usually heat scarred where the journal bearings are in the few I've seen.

I think they are balanced, but the balancing gear is either halfassed or the person doing the balancing wasn't trained.

I think that people just don't use a proper size oil restrickter on the cdm's

How so?  I've seen them with/without, both fail when you try to push them.

MHI td05 use a steel piston ring type seal.

i use a 1/16" restrictor on mine and it took a dump daily driving at 15psi after 4-5 months each.

still waiting to see how long my rebuild lasts on the first one i had. still at 15psi daily driving and the same restrictor.
