My summer Fab project
« on: March 17, 2009, 05:00:39 PM »

Decided to put this up' its already in my build thread, but it feels like it belongs here too.
Its ugly, but it does what I wanted it to. And that is 3 things.  Move the turbo down and forward, give a place to mount the external gate, and adapt from a mitsu flange, to a non standard holset pattern.

Its made 100% from stuff out of the farm junk pile and welded using my dad's rHMT style stick welder.
A big ass alternator on our service truck with two switches, one to remove the battery from the charging circuit, and one momentary switch mounted on the stinger that removes the regulator from the circuit for max voltage.

And in progress/test fitting before finishing welding and adding the WG tube.

Finished and ready to run.

Thanks.  I'm gonna have to post up some of the rHMt style shit my dad has built. Back in the 80's when I was just a pup. He would be a real OG. haha  :noel:
Converted a VW beetle into a pickup.

Built a water pumping windmill himself, using a welded rear differential to convert to the pump stroke at the top of the tower.

Turbo'ed one of the beetles he had using stacked carbs for boost enrichment.

Built his own wind generators, including winding the stators, building the towers for them.

The welding unit that I used to make that manifold adapter.  That setup has outlasted 3 trucks that its been on.

I wish I could remember half the shit he's built. lol

Its funny he's the guy most of the locals call or come to when their combine breaks down or they can't figure out what the hell is wrong with it.

You could say rHMT has been a way of life for me long before I found this website.  Now I just have more people to BS with that think like me.

Did the genes make you into a HMT'er, or did all the practice troubleshooting a DSM do that? :P

This is one of the reasons I want summer here soon! I really want to see how your project works out.

It works so well I don't know why more people don't use it.
seeing your use of tractor supply bolts, i wonder how many millions of pounds of that shit is in garages toolboxes etc around the united states for the homebrew fab shit, it's mind boggling
I would probably be surprised how many we use for farm stuff every year, just on our farm. lol
nice

love the rhmt water pump wind mill

I've gotta find the picture of when it was knocked over by o tornado when I was a couple years old.  It broke off and layed over, so he ended up cutting the tower off where it broke and moving it to where it is located now.   Oh yeah, the first well for the windmill he dug himself.  Using sand bucket, a pulley system, and the rope around an extra rim attatched to the wheel on his beetle.  Put it up on blocks and run in fwd or reverse to raise and lower the bucket in the hole.

Then there is the homemade on a trailer lathe so its portable.  Speeds controlled with a motorcycle gearbox, powered by a 12v dc motor.

I've got to get some pictures of this shit when I go home this weekend. haha

The rHMT definitely comes from genes, and growing up there.  The DSM just helped refine it. lol

Got a few pictures of the RHMT style goodness of my dad's doing.   Kansas had the blizzard friday, so there is a lot of snow still even though it was almost 50 degrees on sunday and it melted a large amount of it.  40 miles west of where my parents live it snowed 28".  They got about 13".  Damn kansas weather.

The adapter he fabbed to mount the HE551V VGT on the 8.3 cummins powered combine.

His homemade lathe on a trailer, its too bad it hasn't been used in years and would need some work.

A couple more of the windmill. Has the arm thing here to extend the stroke length and offset it so the well isn't directly over the well. Makes it much easier to pull the sand point out etc.  It needs work too, hasn't pumped water in a while.  :-\

VW beetle he turned into a truck like 30 years ago.

The wind generator partially powering our home.

Backup diesel generator.

The batteries, two 24volt forklift batteries.

Electrical distribution, and the high voltage is a lie.  :P

Not pictured is the 20 or so photovoltaics on the roof providing ~1500 watts on a sunny day.

The 3600 watt Trace inverter converting the 24v to 110 for home use. Only thing we don't have there is air conditioning.

The concrete dome he built by hand, mixing and carrying all the concrete by hand, using water from the well he drilled on his own. lol

Lived in it until I was 5 or so, then my mom started building the rest of our house. Its been added onto in sections over the last 20 years lol.

The grain trailer my dad and I built.

The vw truck/bug thing hasn't been driven in probably 20 years.  The lathe and windmill haven't been used in a few years either.  He has too many things going on anymore to do a whole lot to that stuff unfortunately.   Takes care of all the dirt roads in the township, him and my mom take care of a good size cemetery, then there is the lucal custom harvesting business that takes several months out of the year.Maintaining all the equipment too.
My mom does small construction jobs, and takes trips with Habitat For Humanity in the off season too.

They are both in their upper 50's too, haha.

Thanks guys.  :)

Its pretty cool that the windmill will lay completely over with the use of a tractor.

Thanks guys.  I'm gonna have to climb the thing and take some pictures of the windmill up top.  To go from the wheel to the up down stroke its the rear dif out of a truck, welded and an arm welded on the hub flange for the up down.

The reason it doesn't work anymore is the weld on the arm broke and we haven't had the motivation to lay it down and reweld and fix it.

I'll have to get a picture of our modified HF gantry crane.  Extended it vertically and lengthened and put on wheels and connected to our ford tractor front loader use it to pull heavy diesel engines out of the combines 14 or so feet up.
