What is the best was u use? I used a wire wheel on a drill press. Did pretty well except I can't get all the cardon off he valve face what do u use? Chemicals? Another tool?

Is it a bad thing if you take the coating off the face of the valve? I tried a dremel with a sanding disk and it went straight to the metal.

I've been told getting them really hot then quenching them will make the stuff pop right off. I haven't done this myself. So if you got a junk head laying around try it on the stuff you ain't gonna use.

In my vitara d, I used 120 grit aluminum oxide blast media. It ate the carbon like a snack. Then I coated them with techline cbc-1:

Next time before you take the engine out of the running car. Get a spray bottle of distilled water and spray it in your tb while the car is running(keep the revs around 3k) to remove the carbon...

Soak head in purple power for a couple hours. Power wash for 10+ minutes to get the looser stuff off.

I build hondas I have never touched a v8 block in my life. Dont let it soak for days and your fine. Purple power is pretty strong stuff give it an hour or two soak and then powerwash the shit out of it. 90 percent of the nasty stuff will be gone.

Use your local car wash to power wash engines/heads

thats exactly how I cleaned my head soaked it in purple clean and oil eater the greasy build up few right off. It's the hard carbon I can't get off. I have 80 grit aluminum oxide media but didn't know if that was to strong for the valves.

on one of my sohc motors it had been burning oil and the carbon buildup on the valves was too tough for even a 6" bench grinder with wire wheel. ended up using a media blaster instead. worked like a charm

Painters brush and carb cleaner will melt carbon off without any mechanical bullshit like grinders.

And you're doing it wrong. Chuck the valve in the drill press and then use sand paper or a wire brush to get the carbon off. I undercut and backcut my valves spinning them in a drill press and using a file, dremel, rough sand paper, then fine sand paper. Polished undercut light weight valves for free =

when i rebuild my old head on a cheap, i used this product called chem-dip. It is a gallon paint can that has a solution in it and a little metal tray. you just set the valves in the tray and close the lid, come back after a good amount of time (over night for me) and bam there brand new looking.

+1 then I chuck them up on my drill press and sand and polish the valve taking care of not damaging the seat face.

and a few bucks on hose and stick the end in the soda, or whatever, they sell walnut shells and glassbeads at HF too. and the right kind of (armex) soda for blasting. i heard you can just use powder laundry detergent too

im gona try it on some motorcycle parts, i did some shopping

50lb bag of sodium bicarb for blasting is $30 at HF (they actually use namebrand armex shit)

large buckets of generic laundry soap powder costs $18 for 40lbs and is easier to get. and i dont have to go to HF.

the soap is made from sodium carbonate. baking soda is sodium bicabonate. not sure if there will be any negative affects. as usual im willing to wreck my shit finding out
