If i had enough free time i would have tried welding together cans for charge piping but i only get around 12 hrs a week max so im gonna use radiator hose and scrap pipes from other builds around the yard on this one. I estimate total length from compressor outlet to throttle body to be under 4 feet including intercooler. Not much piping will be needed  . Will post some progress pics later this weekend.

Ive had bad luck with the FIC, trying to combat the stupid subaru ECU.

You should sign up at www.dorikaze.com, it will be good times.

Keep up the good work.

Why the fuck would you use FIC on a subaru when there are grassroots flash software for free?

FIC works well on somethings, and shite on others.  Hit and miss it seems.

It's probably one of the crappy JECS ECUs.  Sad thing is, they can be chipped and tuned - not straightforward for the n00b though.

FICs work okay on stone age EFI where the ECU isn't trying to do complex emissions counter-corrections, and they work okay on factory wideband cars.  For everything else, do something else.  If you have FIC money I can probably direct you to something better, anyway.

2 things:

A) chargepipe length doesn't do shit for response. It's almost negligable difference in diameter/length because the engine is basicly "leaking" a whole hell of a lot more volume than the pipes make up.

B) No electric fan you'll find for under $350 will provide the air movement you'll want to do anything for IAT's. Put a subi scoop on it & seal it somewhat with big strips of adhesive foam rubber and be done with it. Or go with an extra few feet of piping and use a fmic.

Other than that, tune it the best you can before you rip on it. Search for gooseman if you think for a second you'll just do one 4th gear pull.

Thanks for the insight man. a buddy of mine was telling me the same thing last night. with the 4agze we have always believed that long large piping associated with a fmic , we get lagg  because the s/c has to fill up the long length of piping and huge fmic . In any case the intercooler positioning and piping is still in its planning stages, might go smic or fmic .

The car already has a hood scoop, well sort of. ( i cut some louvers into the hood with a grinder to allow air flow for tmic when the car was s/c) im looking to block that off soon . A friend was suggesting that i mount the stock intercooler somewhere to the lower front left of the car, tried it out  and it actually looked good and doable. will consider when im ready to mount .

Did some more work on car this weekend but my camera is not linking to my pc so i cant upload pics yet. swapped crappy 4agze intake mani for 4age manifold, swapped in new water lines, new alternator  and bracketing, and cleaned and reisstalled fuel rail and injectors. I will try to post pics later.

the turbo is both oil and water cooled, i dont intend on using water system, what do people do with the ports. Live them open ?

Ok a bit or an update. scraped the t28 in favor of a t3/t04e , The t28 was missing a plate that goes under the turbine wheel , I was told that running the turbo without this plate will lead to premature seal ware so a friend gave me a brand new t3/t04e for free. Compressor cover says .50 ar and turbine says .63 ar

More to come

havent been much to update. progress has been slow due to me not having time to work on the car because of final exams and me being dead broke at the moment. All i need to complete the build is an external wastegate and to have my friend finish up the harness. will post some pics up soon.

Not much of an update, but i finished intercooler mock up just need to weld abv to hot side of piping and finish oil lines and still waiting on a wastegate , I start work next week so hopefully i will be able to get one after pay day.

Got a question for the more knowledgeable members , i was showing a guy some pics of the manifold and he pointed this out to me:
" wont the exhaust gas have a whole heap a turbulence wen it flows downward according to the shapes & direction flow of the logs / runners, bucks up on a plate (assumin that the regular exit to the manifold is blocked off) & then has to flow upwards to the turbo?"

Now my question is how does a turbulent exhaust gas flow affect a motor ? Boost spikes, slow spool ? I really dont give a fuck because im gonna use the manifold either way.

Ok a bit of an update. Progress has been really slow, due to me not having much spare time and money to complete this build. Decided to revert to the t28 i originally planned on using because I figured the t3/t4 would be nice for the power i am looking to make but i dont have the external wastegate yet and i wanted to start off with something a lil smaller for my initial build.

I still needed an internal wastegate for the t28, the stock one was no good because it would hit the radiator fan shroud, so i had to modify another to fit. I had a couple laying around so we went to work on it and came out with this.

The t28 was missing a "dust shield/heatshield/plate gasket thingy" couldnt get it anywhere so i improvised.

Cut up a 7afe piston ring and used it as a gasket/spacer thingy.

Still needed a tee for my oil lines, one night i was helping some friends work on a v8 powered supra and asked if he had any tee's. He gave me a brass tee but the threads didnt wanna mesh with the threads on my block. Took it to my workplace and sorta bevelled the tip but it still didnt wanna mesh so i just cut the tip off an oil pressure sender and brazed it to the tip of the tee. came out pretty good. Added some solder for good measure.

Almost done. Just need to finish oil drain and harness tomorrow and it willl be ready to boost.

Will get some pics of my copper oil feed etc tomorrow.

Found some old pics looking through my camera.

Pics of the car after last drag event in december. If you look closely you will see my custom "hood scoop". Race day was approaching and i needed a scoop to feed air to my tmic so i took a grinder to the hood and made some louvers.

poor photoshop attempt at fitting my new rims. You get the idea.

B) No electric fan you'll find for under $350 will provide the air movement you'll want to do anything for IAT's. Put a subi scoop on it & seal it somewhat with big strips of adhesive foam rubber and be done with it. Or go with an extra few feet of piping and use a fmic.

Horse cock. 97/98 Mark VIII fan pushes a shit ton of CFMs (I've heard reports of between 4k and 5.5k). 1800 RPMs on Lo, 2225 on Hi. You can buy one new from O'Reillys for ~ $100.
