FUCK YOU HAYNES
« on: February 24, 2010, 09:38:37 PM »

I know this is basically common knowledge, but as a reminder: don't use the fucking torque specs from Haynes manuals.

The transmission-to-engine bolt torque should supposedly be 85ft-lbs according to them for an Integra.  I thought it sounded a bit too high but said fuck it and went for it anyway.  Stripped one of the bolt holes out.  They said 65ft-lbs for Civic/CRV so I negotiated and torqued them all to 70ft-lbs.

Looked at the FAQ on another Honda forum and it listed 45ft-lbs!  Must undo tomorrow.

I should have known better since the first time I did a car repair and the dizzy diagram had the dizzy-to-cylinder numbers off...

Also if anyone remembers a long, long time ago when my CRX wouldn't go into gear once the engine was running after the night before where it POPPED trying to put it in reverse, then drove fine...tore it apart today and the metal around the springs on the pressure plate had shattered in a few places.

Ehhhhh?  I typically check the torque specs so I don't overtorque :P  Snapped too many bolts.

The fucked threads and fucked pressure plate had nothing to do with the CRX.  Pressure plate was on the stock engine and ate itself 7 months go.  Bell housing is on the new engine, and I didn't torque it until the housing was mated with the block so the input shaft is fine.  It fucked up because I listened to haynes and he's a fucking liar.

only thing I have ever torqued were headstuds, and I always end up cranking them down more after releasing some excess pressure through the hg in a few miles anyway

I only torque drivetrain related shit, as I'm usually too lazy and just turn the wrench til it's nice and toight.

The other bolts should be enough for the transmission to stay on without that one.  I don't know why I even bothered, it's not like there's much force that would cause them to come loose.

Some people just don' t have that "feel" of when to back off.

I can "feel" it just fine when it's not a long, sturdy bolt in a long threaded hole trying to torque to 85lbs with a 16-20" torque wrench...  Tighter...tighter...tighter...snap...there was no point where it was starting to "give" :P

Honda Factory service manual = technical drawings

haynes, chiltons = comic book

Indeed.  Will be sure to use specs from service manuals instead of trusting Haynes ever again, this was just the breaking point :P

exactly, Fuck torquing anything, i torque to scott spec, hit it once or twice with the impact gun and its good.  Only torque down the head with a torque wrench and the rod bolts and main's.  Everything else go by feel.

x2 and even then, it's pretty much rod bolts, mains and headstuds.

Everything else get tightened by feel. I do like to use 1/4 stuff when working with smaller nuts/bolts though, just as a precaution.

I do torque the lug nuts, but I leave my torque wrench on 85 ft/lbs for this.

85...fuck that noise...cars/suv's/small pickups 110....big pickups....140....large equipment (huge cube vans,semis..etc..) 1/2" impact torque.....this is all assuming I don't have a torque stick that fits the lugs.  If I do then it's torque it to whatever torque stick fits on it.

110 on a honda=something i do approx 5-6 times a week at work.  Only studs I've ever broken were when I was takin lugs off of cars where fucktards crossed them going on or they have been rusted on for the last 10 years.
