Finding cars to race against!
« on: March 21, 2010, 03:49:44 AM »

Seems to be something of a challenge. I've been silly enough to take my truck out into the wild recently. It drove across the Auckland harbour bridge for the first time in about 7 or 8 years on Tuesday just gone. And I've been giving it as much shit as possible where I know there are no cops. It seems much faster in traffic than alone on the road. The cars just disappear when I floor it :-) such fun. I've been trying to get various evos and stis and such to race me, no such luck, so far. I did get one guy in a pulsar to race, but it looked like he wasn't... just way too much slower than the ute.

I hope all of you bastards are well on the far side of the world, esp those that I caught up with on my epic road trip.

And because I'm not about to start posting porn now, I guess I'll just have to post some vids and pics instead ;-)

http://picasaweb.google.com/oldschool.co.nz/Misc#5449177744736417042

I particularly like the way the dunlop semi slicks left finger prints of themselves at the end of the stripes. They weren't bad tyres, but for 2/3 the price the Toyo R888 grips better, lasts better and is miles better value.

Any tips on how to get these bastards with semi quick cars to race?

Bye for now!

Fred.

Cheers guys. There are heaps more vids on my youtube account, some good, some shit, etc. The "build" thread on ohmt was really just a "see if i can get on the front page thread" because a mate of mine from Denver got his holset mx3 mazda up there. The real build thread has hundreds of megs of photos and is boringly long. That ohmt thread was the highlights.

I cbf looking for it on ohmt, so here is the same set of pictures on my site :

http://www.diyefi.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16

Don't bother with page 2, here is the highlight, an epic engine bay shot from my mates fancy Nikon :

The way I was trying to get them to race was just coming up along side, leaning on it, lifting for the woosh, like a wanker, and then drifting back to see what they had to say. A few of them were large indigenous people that I didn't want to upset - if I couldn't get away... things wouldn't  be looking good for my skinny white arse.

Nothing to see here, but if you listen you can hear it do 0 -  210kph in about 17 seconds. I'll improve on this with a better launch and better  ratios :

Ford Courier 0 - 210kph/130mph in about 17 seconds.

This one is fairly decent :

Blowing the diff with corner to corner 3rd gear pulls

That wouldn't happen to be Gorilla tape holding up the overflow bottle would it?

That should work, sounds like they are lamers.  I'd try pacing them until they bite.

Also, I'm not sure what your indigenous people are like, but car people are car people.  If you smile a lot, wave, and tell them something nice about their car regardless of how the race turns out - even if they don't race - then you'll have less than zero chance of hostility.

Also, h2a's faggotry just made the Banhammer Wednesday list.

Thanks Robb! When you are ready, just let me know. And anyone else, with a bit of a sanity check. You yanks/rebels were most generous to me, so I'd be more than happy to return the favour if I am in a situation where I can.

Yep Aero, "fixed" the diff - it's now not LSD, it's now MIG-spec - which although I do like, I don't like as much as the tight LSD that is out to go into the next diff that I'm building with disk brakes. Same shit house ratio too... 1st is utterly useless and 5th tops out at 130mph at 7500rpm... 4.4444 ftl. Can't wait for the rotor box ratios and 3.9 diff, will be a totally different machine to drive...

Yes, that is duct tape (and a cable tie) holding the current overflow bottle on there. It was an after thought. I was almost ready to drive it and suddenly went "what is missing" and realised I didn't havce that. There was a gap there, so there it went! :-)

As for the people that look like this :

http://blogs.reuters.com/uknews/files/2008/11/haka.jpg

They were fine, but if I used the suggested tactic of pissing them off to get them to try to chase me, that's when I'd be concerned :-)

Poor h2a, it's always funny when shit like that goes down. Should teach a few other noobs to think for themselves/not be sheep.

Ute now has a sweet swappable tow bar setup. More weight over those wheels and more stealth from a cops perspective (cover that alloy panel  up a bit better). Also, can tow with it! :-)

If NZ is anything like AUS, I'd assume a nice "GM sucks" sticker on your car would result in a lot of people trying to run you off the road.  If you drive faster than them, it's basically a race.

I went out to a local non rotary mazda enthusiast meet up tonight... no fast cars there.

BUT, in the carpark of the local KFC in the centre of town, there was a nice looking white evo 5 or 6... so i wandered over and explained the situation and convinced him to race me. And we did. And it was epic fun. I think the truck *would* be a bit faster than him as is, if not for the lack of traction, wrong speed we started at, shit ratios, and lag caused by shit ratios. As it was, he got in front of me, then i stayed with him sideways through 3rd and pulled slightly on him through 4th. Ended up nearly quadrupling the speed limit... have some vids, not very good, though.

If I had a taller diff, closer rx7 ratios and sticker rear tyres, i'd have won convincingly. I need to get one of those job things so i can finish the bastard off and make it street legal and properly fast.

Based on what I saw tonight I'd have to revise my drag strip estimate to mid 13 in its current state with potential for mid 12 when sorted out.

Yeah, I'm alive, kicking and in the land of the long white (burnout) cloud! (and sheep)

5 sheep in the back will offer you traction, sleeper effect, and meat for your victory BBQ, win win and win.

ROFL, I like it.

However I'd prefer to take weight out of the front with foam sandwich panels, no front steel wall (what do you call that), no corolla arms keeping the engine still, ally brackets and sumps and manifolds instead of steel, and move weight backwards including radiator and  engine and box and intercooler. One of these years...

Another thing I'm keen to do, irrespective of weight distribution is gear dependent boost control. Then I can run say 10psi in 1st, 15psi in 2nd, 23 psi in 3rd and so on, or similar. Many stock turbo cars limit boost in 1/2 and I've seen threads on here/oldhmt about diy methods too. I want my ECU to do it :-)

I had the same problem when I had my van fred. I found driving beside them at 60kph and baging up the rears while still maintaining 60kph was the best way to get an evo to play :noel: But not even that used to work for a few of the Christchurch 2j supras, they wouldnt have a bar of it.  :(
