tools needed to rebuild tranny?
« on: May 24, 2010, 09:27:07 PM »

I'm considering tackling the rebuild on the H tranny.  I've done quite a few rear ends on RWD cars before so the FD and LSD part isnt a problem.  The problem is the main shaft and countershaft.  I'm going to run an MFactory sychro set so everything will have to be broken down.

anyone want to lend some advice?

Ask bdvt, Give him a call on the phone,  he has done more than his fair share of rebuilding them.

Bones got woods... Important thing some forget....  So fagbait if you have any ?s give me a pm with your moms number and illcall you at 3 am your time and we can discuss....l

LOL

JK

 H trannys are super straightforward.

Youll need a 1/2 drive ratchet to take off the plug for the snap ring as well, didnt see it in bones pic,

Sockets:
32mm socket for countershaft nut
12mm - case bolts, detent ball assys and shifter assy
10mm - shifter box and reverse  fork assy
14mm - reverse idler shaft and the two long case bolts located adjacent to the shifter box

feeler gauges
extension
snap ring pliers
prybar
scotchbrite

couple pieces of wood to support the tranny up so that the input shft isnt getting hammered on sitting on its face

Brake clean
Hondabond (I use ulta gray ts 1/5th as expensive and just about the same shit)
lube of choice (but not the stuff you use with your boy toy)

If changing the bearings on the diff... The list gets a bit more in depth, if not... It doesnt change

Spiker likes my woods :)

I don't do H bitches or GSR/ITR tapered faggot bearings. I've done two Scion trannys with tapered diff bearings, a huge PITA.

I've no need for Scotchbrite pads, unless you mean for the air grinder.  The key is to load the fresh pads up with gunk so they don't cut too fast on cases you are doing for customers.

An old shift shaft rod is soft steel, useful for tapping in shims or hitting the center of the MS to knock the bearing and 5th gear off.

I is a redneck, I use left over parts that would be scrape to assist on building other items, it is the hot rodding way.

what are you doing to not need a press?  We have one at the shop but i was looking to do this at home in my garage.

Only thing i'm waiting on is the sync set so as soon as it comes in, i'll be starting on it.

Any tips on clearances?  looser than spec...tighter...etc or is the clearances not adjustable?  Spiker you know how much of a bitch these trannies are to shift at high rpm (i'll be in the 9500 area) so if you have any advice it would be appreciated.  I'll get widenigger to give you head for your good deeds.

I've done two b series and no press needed.  Nothing is that night of a fit.  A few light taps here and there and using the weight of the shaft and gravity to your advantage.  Pretty easy stuff really.  A nice set of snap ring pliers are nice.  Most of what you need can be done with what you have laying around.  Be clean and take care to make sure everything is in the right order.  Not rocket science.

All diff bearings are pressed on, but read the FSM, nothing a 1 5/8" socket and hammer won't install.

Bone and Aquafina helped me out when I rebuilt my D series trans. I posted pics up with a question and read write up from online. I also had a spare trans that I used for reference.
I used a heat gun to heat the gears to slide them off of the counter shaft.

Heat gun is a complete waste of time. I've done tens of these things and never ever needed more than I stated. Stick to having other people build your shot son.

98vhomo is armed with all the info he needs.

When the mainshaft outer bearing gets stuck in the case, you need a space heater or heat gun ti get it out.

Out of no where, the bearing drops free. No always a good thing when you are in a quiet garage and about 1/2 lit.

That's odd that it came out that easily... none of mine have ever just "fell" out of the case.  Send that tranny to me and ill put it in my car and test it for you free of charge.

i'd rather not have this one broken on its way back  ;)

this trans has been a BEAUTY other than at the track on slicks shifting above 8000.  If the twin disk does for me what you said it did for you, i'll finally find the ONE thing that let me shift without lockout to 2nd gear above 8000 or grinding into 3rd.

syncro's came in.  I was kind of upset they didnt come with new springs.  In regards to reusing those from the two sets of gear sets i have, what do i need to look for to figure out which ones are in the best shape?
