I hated the drive by wire throttle in my O7 SI. That shit would lag for .25-.5 seconds when i stomped on it sometimes. Once i was pulling out of a parking lot, (took off traction control) and eased out onto the road, then i stomped on it, and the fucking car just sat there, it finally went, scared the shit out of me because there was a big as truck coming.

I hated it to death, glad it never did anything stupid to that extent....

This is why automatics are gay, if those people drove a stick shifts none of this would happen.

Right, which is what I said long ago.

The thing is your average soccer mom isn't going to know to do this.  Hell, my gf gets upset when I'm driving her auto Saturn and downshift it into 3rd or 2nd coming down a mountain.  She freaks out and says "I don't like this.  You're going to break something."  Yeah whatever.  The thing is they're scared to do something like that and the sound of a free revving redlined engine also scares your layman office worker that knows nothing about the car they paid $40k for.  She's been driving before and I've put it in neutral and she freaks out like we're going to crash and die.  When you have cars that basically drive themselves you get people that don't know how to drive.  I'll stick to my manual transmissions, throttle cables, and lack of cruise control.

Exactly.

The average driver knows jack shit about the very basics of how a car works, and that needs to change IMO.

The guy is going at high speed and do nothing to stop the car before an intersection. Did he expect a miracle to happen?

When you don't know what's going on to make your car go, and you never know what it feels like to be near limits (yours or the car's), you are screwed not if, but when something does happen.  Like last winter, my mom lost the tail of her camry in the snow, and spun it into a ditch.  She had snow tires on all corners, and all that would have been needed to save it was a little countersteer and some more throttle.  A basic understanding of vehicle dynamics could put the towing companies out of business in the winter around here.  They make a killing on winchouts.

The guy is going at high speed and do nothing to stop the car before an intersection. Did he expect a miracle to happen?

They did say "pray" on the phone recording.

I think it was more of a figure of speech in that case. I say God help those who don't help themselves  :?:

I had a retarded floormat get my accelerator in my civic. I went to slow down and turn at an intersection and my car decided it wasnt slowing down. First thing I did was throw the bitch in neutral and started to pull on my ebrake a little bit. Looked down and saw my floormat, kicked it back stuck it in drive and continued driving. I guess some people just wouldn't have the sense to do that

If you can't turn a key off, you are retarded. No servo error could cause that. The best thing to hope for is a same throttle % increase, not a run-away.

No ghost in the machine

Some accidents can be explained

Right around the time when American car makes are getting their asses handed to them

No brakes? Brakes are still hydraulic bitches!

This all seem a little fishy. Like selective reporting plus big guy targeting. No other countries other than America? That report has holes in it bigger than jagojon3's mothers vaginey.

You sir are 100% right, i work for Toyota, the car has to be driven by a mentally challenged 5 year old to get to the point and act like these reports suggest, i say this is just a campaing to damage the name of the make.

i say you're a fucking shitbag. another french canadian. i can deal with francis, he's smart. you on the other hand... no.

Who was that directed towards, and who is Francis?

It was directed at the guy he was quoting, and Francis is an honorary American citizen when posting in the EM forum.

becuase it was in a car that uses transponder tags and a push button start
he did not know that in order to shut it off you have to hold the 'start' button for 3 seconds.
many new cars will not shift to neutral or park under power
many hybrids dont have gears, they have forward and reverse-that is it.

While I very much dislike DBW, the major problem is that the average driver does not know enough about cars to react properly in a situation like that.

took the words right out of my mouth.

throw the damn car in neutral. even if they just let the engine blow up. better than dieing.

i bet there are plenty of cases where thats exactly what the people did and they were safe and since nothing super bad
happened they never reported it.

in other words HOW MANY CASES GO UNREPORTED

Guys?

Remember the whole concept of removing the warning tags from everything and letting the problem take care of itself?  We need to actively prevent how to stop modern vehicles from getting into the hands of the consumers - it's in the owner's manual, if they can't fucking RTFM let them die.

Very true.  Replace all warnings with something absolving anyone of legal responsibility.  Let's start with lawnmowers, SUV's (rollover warnings), and cigarettes.  Also might as well make a lot of drugs legal again, since people would be held accountable for their own actions.

So what do you guys think the cause of these accidents are? I'm saying the technology is not to blame. There has to be some under-lying cause here.

Theories?

I know of a 2009-2010 Mustang that wrecked due to drive by wire failure.

Or that is the excuse they are using.

you cant expect a little stepper motor to work perfectly all the time in 200F heat/oil ect

Right but the way the system is designed, if there is a failure, the sevro is supposed to close not go WOT.

Depends on whether the failure is the ECU holding the throttle WOT, now isn't it?

What is the point of dbw?  Does it make cruise control more user friendly or something?
No expert on it, but I would imagine it 'could' improve drive-ability if tuned well, as the ECU can now control the throttle itself, so instead of trying to measure airflow and guess when airflow is fixing to increase or decrease, it's in complete control.
