Tips on selling a hacked together POS beatup HMT Turbo Teg?
« on: December 26, 2009, 04:02:38 PM »

I still have my beat up teg which I turbod and never really drove because it was an epic failure.  I had intensions of fixing it and making it not suck, but I don't want to.  I want to sell it.  Its sat for about 2 years.  Looks like a POS, and has a shitty HMT setup.  I'm looking to get about $2k for it.

How do I sell this thing and get it out of my garage?  Craigslist is a waste of time.  People are flake idiots that cannot read.  I don't feel like selling it to someone just to have them call me saying "hey man, the car has crappy brakes and rotors and blew up because I was going 120 down the parkway".  I also hate people.

Tell me the easiest way to sell this car because anyone that shows remote interest in the car is a moron(you'd have to be quite frankly) and I know once I sell it to them, it will just be 7 minutes after they buy the car I'll get a call saying its blown or something ridiculous.  In the ad I clearly have it listed as "sold as-is in non-running condition" so I'm covered on that basis.  I just don't feel like dealing with it.

They'll have my phone number and know where I live.  $2000 is not worth any potential hassle.  I'd rather wait and sell the car to half an idiot vs a complete idiot.  I just need tools to market the car towards a half an idiot.

If the car doesn't sell by Feb 1, I'm junking it for $300.

part it out... I had a '94 turbo teg that I cracked the sleeve on. I ended up pulling the motor and swapping it to a CRX. Then parted out the shell (which had looked like it had been rolled a few times). After taking everything that was worth anything out of the car and selling it piece by piece, came off making more than what I initially thought the car was worth. Sell the turbo kit, the motor, tranny, and anything aftermarket all separately. Then pull the good interior pieces and undamaged body pieces. Those rear hatches go for big money for someone with a broken back glass (the cost of the back glass new is $1400). i even sold the vin plates. Then scrap whats left of the shell.

Thats really the only way to make any money off a beat to shit teg.

I don't care about the money.  I want the car gone.  I don't care to put forth a single minute of effort to part it out.  If someone offered me $1500 and promised to tow the car away and never bother me again, I'd probably take it.

Dont use fancy words, craiglist idiots take it as offensive.

Use dumbed down english.

Use words like "dis, cuz, dat, tight, dope, nos, hit me up. xpensive. the more gramatical errors and lapse in sentence structure the better.

You dont want to look like a smartass who knows what the fuck hes talking about.

Remember who your selling this to

you have to post it at least double what you want, then let them haggle you down to 2k so they think they got a good ass deaL

he said hes looking for people who ARENT scumbags. i know if i see a craigslist add and it has words like dis dat and a bunch of terrible ebonics/grammar i wont even consider calling about it.

they way the add was written is perfect. of course when/if someone shows up to buy it and they seem a little slow he should make it clear to them that its AS IS and he doesnt care if it blows up after a half mile of driving.

Sell it to me for 500 and I'll have it out of there as soon as I can get plates from the DMV and call AAA on that mofo.  Does it have any rust?

Haha I've never had a Xenocron sticker on anything I've owned.  Just not a fan of stickers.

If you want it gone soon, I'm dead serious. Cash & AAA Plus card in hand.

I agree with both CoreyR and Ghetto_D.  I know if I just dumb it down, I could sell the car.  I've told 2 people interested in the car it wasn't for them.  One was a dad looking to buy his daughter a car.  The other was some idiot today that "wanted to replace the ECU since it needs a retune".

I don't need the bad karma(or whatever you want to refer to it as) when I sell the car with any slight misrepresentation.  We all know when someone sells a car like this for "cheap", the next call you get is 30 minutes later that it blew up and I sold them a POS.  Quite frankly, I want to avoid this like the plague.  This is why I'm selling it as-is, non-running.  I charge the battery, it runs.  No questions asked.  This car ALWAYS starts on a full battery and a good chip.

If the car isn't sold for a reasonable amount in 30ish days, I will seriously consider put a RHMT auction together where the local low ballers can have at it.  I'm letting you know now, the car is an 19 yo's failure of a first build on a shoe string budget.  I'd say the best thing on the car is the fact is has one of the last JohnnyRaceCar FMICs.

So, who's got some advice for dealing with the idiots?  I'm refraining from posting on HT due to the bullshit I'll get from those idiots, but it's my next step.  I figure they'll know half what they are talking about so I won't feel bad when some idiot still blows it up.

Get a Go-phone for $30 and use that as your contact number, charge the battery so you can drive and meet them. When you sell, make sure you reiterate that it is sold "AS-IS", and write up a contract that it is sold as so and have the buyer sign it.

Throw Go-Phone in the trash, deposit money in bank.

BTW shouldn't it be running...uberdata? :P

Seriously, I'd pull the turbo crap off, sell it as a "shell w/motor", and let some mexicant by the turbo parts. If they tow it, they know shit's jacked to some extent.

BTW make the ad as short as possible. Most people won't read more than 3 lines before their eyes glaze over and click your email link.

ive sold all kinds of fucked up cars.  just say a little as possible, but dont hide anything.  take any offer above 500 and tell them to fuckoff if they call you back with problems.  leave empty shell casings on the floor in it too.

I sold it a week and a half ago for $2000.  He drove it away.  All I had to do was put in about 2-2.5 hrs of work getting the Ostrich new batteries and put on another base tune.  17 year battery my ass.

Update: http://newjersey.craigslist.org/cto/1599136480.html

Cock head is trying to sell it for $2000 more than he bought it for with a bunch of BS as the description.  I might have to pull a rHMT callathon on him because I was nice enough to spend 2.5 hours turning a non-running car into a running car at 9PM in the freezing cold.  I let him borrow my jumper cables and he hasn't returned them and its been over a month.

FUCK YOU!
