Title: My turbo setup (broken cams pics added 6/7 pg 2)
Post by: hatchbox90 on April 11, 2009, 10:20:41 PM
Ok so ive been out of the honda stuff for a while and i recently purchased a crx

my setup is

lsvtacH!!!!!!!!!!
81.5mm GE sleeved
CP 9.5:1 pistons
eagle rods
ITR head
broken  crower stage 2 turbo cams
supertech valves/springs/retainers
slightly p/p
skunk2 pro series intake manifold portmatched runners and TB, will be done by Chris when my manifold gets here  O0
74mm throttlebody
csaddict mini ram
Holset HE351cw
4"down pipe
stealthmode oil lines
Tial 44mm wastegate
Tial knockoff BOV
ebay intercooler
4bar map sensor
precision 1000cc
Walbro 255

Im trying to get this done before the NW dyno meet but i dont think i will make it, and im hoping to get leed to tune this thing if i do make it  :noel:

Im looking for maybe 500 horses on whatever amount of boost but 400 will be fine, this is my daily driver too so it will be pretty damn fun. I have yet to purchase LSD for my tranny bexause funds are running low, now for the pics.

Well i purchased the complete block from a guy in vancouver WA, it had about 2000 miles on it if that.   Unsure of the block being decked or not The cams are not degreed, wasnt sure if spending money on cam gears would be worth it or not.   Yes the manifold was built by Dave. Top notch welding right there.

Im drunk and Jenna (feona) ius throwing up right now

DAve, the manifold is fucking sweeet, your welds are amazing  O0.   Ill try to keep this updated.  HOPEFULLY ill have this setup in and running in about 2 or 3 weeks, all i need if my intake manifold and TB bored and shit and ill be ready to go.   But it dependsa on my work schedule

Front bar=front bumper lol. Sorry for the confusion, Im just trying to work out how big the intercooler is and how you hooked up the intercooler pipes with out having to cut huge holes in your bumper. I want a nice stealth install like that for my ef im building. :P

Well i gave you the dimensions, i didnt cut a damn thing on my bumper.  Only thing is that the charge pipes are going to be a bitch because of the fog lights.

Other than that i took out my power steering cooler that was behind the ac and just looped it(because i really dont need my PS to be cooled) and i think i moved one of my horns over just a wee bit.  I marked the center between the headlights and marked the center of the cooler and wa la, fits good but not perfect, but its better than a mangled front bumper and it will hide my intercooler well

So this friday i started ripping the stock motor out of the rex, by midnight friday the motor was out and it was time to sleep.  Saterday i kinda cleaned the engine bay up a little and ran my wideband so it tucked close to the frame of the car in the engine bay, Converted to obd1 and finished welding my downpipe and dumptube. spraypainted and heatwrapped on sunday and today my camera decided to hold a little bit of battery power so i could actually turn the fucking thing on.

All im waiting for is my intake manifold and alternator and this bitch is going in. Ill take pics of the monster TB when it comes back with the intake mani. Thanks Chris  :noel:

4" Downpipe clears the radiator by about 1/2 inch  O0 with no gangster lean

Driving Sunday afternoon, first gear ripper then my car goes limp and dies.  Pull over and try to figure out wtf is wrong, tow it home and figure out i dont have any spark.  Take the dizzy off and try to crank it over, notice the car is turning over but the intake cam moving.  take the valve cover off to find that these awesome crower cams decided to break in HALF.  Not one cam, but both.

ill get shitty cell phone pictures up when my phone wants to cooperate with me and my computer

How old are the crower cams? Many of the early ones from atleast 5+ years ago were prone to this

For the dohc vtec b series crowd just buy ctr/itr cams and call it a day.

Not sure how old the cams are, but the part number is 63401-t2, Im not sure if those are the older crower cams or not, because ive seen the same crower cams with a part number that starts with a b.

I called crower multiple times and they have yet to return my call. >:(

I wouldnt be too pissed but some of my valves are fucked and the pistons are knicked, plus Cool Desert Nights(local car show) is coming up in a month and now im going to miss it. If crower even knocks off money to replace mine i would be content. Well see. pics to come shortly

Those cams looks IDENTICAL to mine, broken in the same spots

Maybe ill go with Brian crower instead, havnt seen anything about his cams snapping, plus his customer service seems to be better

Hotrex got an entire Crower valve train setup with Crower cams and ran it and blew all the exhaust cam caps apart. I wouldn't buy shit from them.

Crower or Brian Crower?

seems like when brian worked at crower he was the guy to talk to to get your shit back up and running.

he had brian crowers.

talked to dave crower today, asked me to mail him the cams and he said hell see what he can do for me.  Mentions that my valves were screwed and he said he might replace the cams and possibly the valvetrain

Soo if he will replace the cams, should i put them to use or should i sell them and get oem's

Perhaps a bad set of cores they know about hence why crower is being very cool about this. I know the first couple batches of crower, skunk cams back in the day all either went flat or did what happened to both you and hotrex.

For the dohc vtec motor crowd from b/h/k there all is OEM upgrades so IMO unless your doing an all motor build even then I love ctr cams in B motors no need to run aftermarket camshafts.

For all you guys who dont want to get shafted when buying used ctr/itr cams great simple ID pics. Yes they are correct.

Since there's obviously a family tiff, who do you believe?  That's right - neither of them.

Crower VTEC cams have always been prone to breaking, they mostly fixed the problem 5+ years ago to the point where Skunk2 Pro's were a less reliable cam.  Recently they released a bunch of blems - either old cams they sat on for years, or another batch of crapola - and there are a lot of cams breaking.  For SOHC or LS, their stuff is quality.

Brian Crower cams are, honestly, not the biggest on the market.  They are very much marketed at the streetcar crowd, and as such they are a good value.  Josh's LS is the first set of Brian Crower's I have seen or heard of breaking... the fact that Josh was involved leads me to believe it was installer error, or he got a "sweet deal" on the head/motor which had different caps swapped onto it at some point.

Everyone recommending GSR/ITR for a turbo vehicle is correct.

Oem may be the way to go, but those crower cams ripped fucking tits in vtec. compared to the CTR cams i got right now, crower blows them out of the water as far as performance..as far as to the point where i cant tell if vtec is engaging, or if the cams just dont even come close to comparing.

I know Brian crower was very deep into drugs for years his old man use to bad mouth him to hickman all the time since dave use to get alot of one off grinds for some very large one off style all motor builds.

Brian was also a dick to deal with when I would get regrinds from them along time ago. He always tried overcharging me.

Talked to louis from crower today, They got my cams and they wanted to inspect them tomorrow and that i need to call them back tomorrow.  I sent some of the valves along with the cams. Hopefully something comes from this  :-\

Also, i mentioned that I wasnt the first person for this to happen to and they tried to deny it and say that its very rare   ::) . Then continued to ask me where i read it at and so on.  Fuckers

I've only seen a Gude failure, but it was an older SOHC and the owner might have run it low on oil.  Travis Grimm broke an early set of Pro2's.  Never seen a Crower break outside of the forums... but I've never seen a Crower B-VTEC cam ever.   I have seen 20+ sets of Crower 402, 402T, 403, 404 as well as five Crower stage 2 turbo and a single Crower stage 2 NA.  All great cams.
