You bought it used and probably presumed "As-Is".  Fix it or sell it.  It's pretty easy to move a unit like that if you say you got it in an auction and was sold "in working condition but you can't confirm it".  You just have to live with the negative karma, if you believe in that.

i posted an ad on cl where i am honest..

if i deduct those from the price im sure i wont take as big of a hit..

well taking it to a competent welder on monday so well see

Buk for whats its worth. If I were you I would suck it up and pay to have it fixed, cleaned and gone through. At least at that point you know its good to go and you can establish a relationship with the repair shop and they can give you some set up pointers and maybe some help. It would be worth your $300.

i agree as well but im an arab :p

no repair shop is gonna establish a relationship with me except some lady at a welding supply store who was VERY nice.. and cut me deals on almost everything.. she charged me 2bucks for tungsten! that the other shop charged me 3.50 a piece for..

she also tossed in a bottle cap for 5 bucks that the other shop wanted 25 for..

problem is she isnt very knowledgeable about tig welding.. it isnt her thing.. and shes 40 minutes away...

friend recommended a very friendly shop im going to check out.. they are alot closer.. and he drives 40 minutes to see them.. they fixed his welder for 200 bucks.. so well see..

monday im going to get the welder down to them and see what they say...

but ive also been eying hf welders..

Ay-rab isn't the issue.  You aren't a redneck is the issue.  Roll in with some grease stained jeans, mechanics jacket, and say:

"I felt it was time to learn welding but I bit off more than I can chew.  Can you make sure this thing works, and then give me some pointers?"   And don't waste their time with anything else until you learn to say anything in one sentence.

I'd regret a working welder and a couple pointers, too.  Someone might expect me to do work.

based on your pictures, grounding is an issue. Hook the ground on the wood, grab a spray bottle with water in it, or brake clean(works better), place metal close to ground clamp. Now wet down the wood, groundclamp, and metal. Try running a bead and let me know how it works.  You can a more true ground this way, rather then right on the materail. Something to do with the magnetic fields.

I asked that! lol

he said no.. they just split the payment into 12 months..

which was kinda funny.. and caught me off guard.. either way ill get quotes from him tomorrow..

yeah typical rent to own they have massive mark up.. i asked him and he said no mark up they just split the cost into 12 payments..

What are you going to do with that $800 paper weight?  You'd rather spend $2000+ on a new welder when your current one probably only needs $200-300 and it will work fine?  Then you can turn around and sell it in a year for the same $800 you bought it for while you show "Hey, only 12 months ago, I had it fully serviced so you are getting a machine in great condition"

Stop being a dumb Arab.
