SS stand for Stainless Steel? It doesn't look like it. Nice work though!

hmm, if it's not stainless then it must be aluminized?
it sat on the bottom of a car for 12+ years and didn't rust or corrode.

straight down should be fine. just good enough to keep the exhaust away from the compressor inlet

It could be 409ss, but regardless, now that you used steel wool on it, you deposited a bunch of carbon on the surface and it will rust either way.

You need pickling paste, that's the trade name we give it, real breakdown is "Antox 71E Plus". Shit is super corrosive, wear safety goggles, long sleeves and gloves when applying.

A mechanical polish (or sandpaper) could remove some of the deposited surface, certainly better than nothing, as long as you've never used it on a carbon steel previously. Pickling paste is a bit expensive, especially if you don't really need it more than once.

And yes, I know I am bit late to the new forum, I got lost on teh interwebs...

could just finish scuffing it up and shoot it with some high temp black paint
that should keep the rust off it  8)
