I broke Mahle Powerpak pistons.

They are not the 2018 (or whatever) aluminum, instead they are the 4XXX aluminum.  Less exspansion, closer to stock....  But I have busted 4 sets of them so far (two on the original reddevil and two on this wagon.

Something is not right with this current build.  timing is 18 BFDC and fueling is 11-1 and still getting detonation.  I can hear it in the headphones.  The power is "dirty"  It pulls but isn't clean.  If I turn it down to wastegate, then its fine.  But over 14-15 psi, I get knock.

Of course I still have not had ALOT of time to figure out any demons.

And of course, this build may just not work out.  The pistons are much more recessed into the block than they should be, but I used STI head gaskets to bring the head in closer.   Compression is still 8.4 -1 which is probablly higher than I have ever run any of my turbo motors on.

Eh give it time.  I will either blow it up or figure it out.

Sounds like too much advance is part of the problem. Do you have an intercooler? What's your intake temps more or less when in boost?

I have a BAIC (big ass intercooler).  Inlet temps were 110f in 90 degree weather.  Now that its 50 depgrees out, the inlet temps have to be less!

I am going to throw some TORCO in and see what happens.  Had the AFR down to 10-1 and still knock.   >:(

Torco = ick.  Or the 110, anyway.

It might be an ignition break up.  Audible knock = pitted pistons in my experience.

Holding off on the TORCO, its pretty old!

Buying a new timing belt. The old one may have stretched and one cam gear is off "half" a tooth.

Yeah, Torco is out of business.  I expect anything lingering of theirs is old.

HA,

My fucking alternator just shit its pants 100%.  Wagon just started dying while idling....  Looked at the amps and they stayed STEADY when gas was given @ 12.6......  While driving just would miss and miss and miss......

Swapping it out tomorrow.

NOT the alternator...

NOT the battery....

Something, somewhere is causing the ECU to only get LESS than the voltage it needs.  At the battery voltage flucuates from 12.8-13.4 like it should....  Ecu it flucuates from 12.8 -11.8!

Now I need to crawl into the wiring and double check grounds and input....  And its cold and raining and the garage is full of shit.

However, I did clean the heck out of the power leads on the battery and that helps "some".  Now it doesnt just shut off and herk and jerk.....  I am also going to replace the battery terminal that is aluminum with a real lead one.

The wiring for the older legacys is a BITCH when you need to check the ignition!  So I didn't even try.

I did get some better grounding, double check other wiring yad ayad yada but am still stuck with LESS than optimal voltage to the ECU.

But looking at it and thinking about it......  WHAT causes me to originally be optinal fueling and now LEAN? Same MAF signal, same boost level, just leaner?

The fucking AFR is all over the place, up and down! Can't even make it just go dead rich (well I probablly could but that would be RIIIIIIICCCCCH).

So I replace some hard lines that were crimped from injectors 2 and 4 TO 1 and 3....

Gonna replace fuel filter... Bet its wasted money...

Exhaust leak pre-sensor.  If its lean even out of boost its always a vacuum leak or exhaust leak.

DING DING DING! We have a winner!

Quote from: Cougar4;28488057
What you are most likely seeing is a voltage drop due to wire loss. When a high amount of current flows through a small gauge wire the resistance of that wire will cause voltage to drop across that wire connection.

A long long long time ago, before I turboed this car, I had fubarred some injector wiring.  So I had installed a circuit breaker in place of the 30amp slow blow fuse for the injectors as I kept blowing the damn fuse. I needed to install the circuit breaker to keep the car drivable until I figured out the issue.  However, as time went by, this fuse became OUT OF SIGHT = OUT OF MIND.  So over time the wiring (multiple strand) had started to fail.  I had since fixed the injector wiring issue but had not replaced the slow blow fuse.

I replaced the circuit breaker with a real fuse and PRESTO, full voltage to ECU.

Also, I am sure this is why the wagon was running like crap with higher boost levels, the injectors just were not getting enough juice!

Was still having some irritating miss......  So I went to regap the plugs but also decided to replace the plug wires.

First plug wire I pull off I compare to the new plug wires....

WTF?  I though I had male ended plug wires like the ones I bought?   I look down into the boot on the coil end and WAY WAY WAY back is the metal clip part.  So #1 cylinder has been getting all its juice for god knows how long by ARCING close to an inch!

So I replaced all the plug wires, didnt touch the plugs and BINGO, we have a hard pulling weiner.

I hope not to touch the engine bay for at least a few days!   ;D

Of course its raining so no PIR tonight.   >:(

I hope you're not using old gas. It literally has a shelf life of 2 weeks, especially if it's an ethanol blend. I've had small engines not even pop on month old gas, then fire up with vengence with a simple switch to fresh gas.

The other thing, if this persists after the "fix", it may be that combustion chaimber setup. If you have too big of a gap in that quench area, it can artificially lower octane - opposite of what it normally does. Given the fact you probably get extra oil seepage by the exhaust side due to the sideways bores, as well as very wide pistons, it's complicated. Oil one reason CP pistons used to burn up (before they started removing material next to valve reliefs).

With your luck, your crank will now flex and eat your bearings. That seems to be the bane to those engines due to compactness. Oil pump my ass - there is no distance, so no crank support, between journals. 15mm per cylinder would have added less than 2 inches to the motor, and allowed for even wider pistons.

Uh, big bore is the main problem with the 2.5's.  You know those things break ringlands stock?   Subaru punched them out for displacement to try and keep up with the Evo, and now can't stick a forging in there for cold startup emissions reasons.

Those motors need a good set of forgings and they'd be a lot better for the 300-400 whp crowd.

So I have a 2.5" downpipe into a 3" exhaust, no cat (well cat is there, just no "cat"  And Swear To God it truly fell out by itself, questioning the integrity of the exhuast shop....) into a 2.5" muffler.....

I have owned a few 3" mufflers for a few years attached to 3" exhaust systems (basically downpipe back) but never had the time to mess with them.

Well today, I messed with it.

I grabbed the 3" APEXI muffler and exhaust, lined it up with the existing and made some SHARPIE markings.  A few hours later, it was all welded up and ready to run.....

ITS SO FUCKING LOUD!!!!:sadbanana::ritz::disco::banana::taco::furious::eek::rolleyes:  I really am not sure what to do....

But I took it for a test drive anyway....

Wow, did I say loud?

So I got to a section of closed roadway in a school zone and got into 4th gear......

OK, I am running a 20psi max boost gauge...., so I have no idea what I am truyly runnning...

Previously I was hitting about what I think was 22psi max.......Fuel pressure was hitting 57 psi....

New 4th gear run?  Fuel pressure hit 68 psi!!!!

My fuel pressure rising rate has been VERY consistant with boost levels, so I am pretty damn sure that the boost DID increase 10psi, to 30-32 psi for that run....

I pulled over and turned the MBC DOWN!!!!!

Wagon is FASTAR than before, even for same boost levels because it hits peek boost earlier.

Hitting the track this weekend!

Took the family wagon out to the strip (PIR) one last time as it is the end of the season here in Oregon.

Only got one 12.998, but trapped a 110.26!

Was having a hard time hooking up in first.

Had some good power though, was 84 mph in the 1/8th and 109/110 in the 1/4, so I was picking up 25mph in the top end.

Two best runs....

60'         1.917        2.018
330'       5.519        5.644
1/8th     8.441        8.558
mph       84.70        84.92
1/4      12.998      13.092
mph     109.44      110.26

Do not know what boost levels I was running, as the boost gauge stops at 20....  Maybe 25ish?

I was running 4 -1 pump93 to E85.

So hows that ebay turbo?

It fucking rips.  at least for $200 shipped, it fucking rips!

The wagon actually feels faster on the street than on the strip, but I am sure that is for EVERY CAR OUT THERE!   ;D

Been running the turbo since march?

No shaft play, no leaking oil...

Possibly stuck at a XX psi.  Not sure what XX is since my Harbour Freight boost gauge stops at 20psi.  (but if you are not boosting higher than 20, this guage is awesome for $19.99!)
