Suggestions for donor car drivetrain, give your input!
« on: November 17, 2009, 11:14:57 PM »

Okay guys, so this is just a mental exercise of sorts, to get some creative thinking going for a project I may undertake...someday.  I want to build a daily driver custom vehicle out of an old truck, but put a modern day drive train in it.  Here are a few requirements.

 - It must be new enough to be managed by a modern ecu, OBD1 or OBD2.
 - It must not be so new that the donor car would be more than $10K
 - 300Hp minimum in it's stock form
 - Inline drivetrain, not any tranverse mount stuff.
 - Gasoline / E85 Only, no diesel.
 - Car donors only, with excellent ride quality, no truck donors.
 - Four wheel independent suspension.
 - Autotragic transmission

Tunability is a consideration for later, but not required for consideration.  Performance can come later, a comfortable cruiser is more important initially.

Some of the vehicles I thought of were...

 - Lexus GS430
 - Cadillac CTS
 - Lincoln (anything with a Modular Motor and independent suspension?)

I kind of like the Lexus idea, watching jaws drop when I pop the hood of a classic ford truck, to reveal an asian drivetrain.  And the reliability would be solid too.

So lets see what you guys come up with.

Craig

Lincol Mark VIII has a 32V 4.6 V8, fords strongest auto, 93 had an aluminum driveshaft, 8.8 IRS, even has air ride you could incorporate if you wish.

well you mentioned lincoln, a mark viii would be cheap and work out great.  4v mod motor, 4r70w trans a 8.8 IRS rear end.  all pretty standard stuff that you can easily get parts for and have very few problems.

on the plus side i see your example is opposite of your requirement.

Yeah, I'm pretty tricky that way.

how about a 2uz or a 4.6 mod or a lsx/lqx in a 70's celica?

Although I love the early 70s Celica, I'd prob put an S2000 drivetrain in that one.

I want to stick with a reasonably full sized truck for the body of this project.

Oh hell, now that's interesting.  A mercedes or bmw donor?  Hmm, that could be as much fun as an asian drivetrain. Parts would be expensive tho.

what have you picked? why not grab an old studebaker truck? antique dead mfg with efi motor would be neato
Studebaker has absolutly no room in the cab for anything, and very little room in under the hood for modern electroncs and so forth. I did a small block chevy swap added airconditioning and even with the gas tank removed and seat set back ( gas tank is inside the cab from factory) it was very uncomfortable. The guy i built it for ended up selling it because it was so uncomfortable.

I'm going to toss in my vote for Lincoln Mk8, but one caveat: they may be a 4V, but they aren't the Cobra 4V.  Some corners were cut and if you want to breathe on it you'll have to replace a few things.

FYI, a lot of the emissions bullshit can be turned off very cheaply in the mid-late 90s Ford ECUs, super tuneable and stable.
