I fucking hate the orange paint. Most of it is flaking off. The rest of it will come off and then it will get the rhmt low gloss treatment. Tore the motor down tonight. And low and behold, it's been bored 60 over...lol cyl walls look pretty good, but it gonna need a hone and some rings for sure. Don't know about the bearings because I haven't taken the pan off. It does have hydraulic lifters, which means it should still have forged rods, and crank. At least that's what they put in it from the factory. And it was suppose to have factory forged pistons, but I don't know about that now that they are 60 over. But at any rate, it does have the bitchen heads on it. Here is a shot of some early 70's heads on the left with brand new big valves in it. And on the right it has the same large valves but from the factory. Look at the size of the intake port difference though.....lol

While I was over at my step dads today picking up his chery picked I saw this laying on the floor....

So I scored a holly 650 cfm carb. It will work just fine for now

Also finished up banging out the old wheel bearings, and put the new ones in and the front brakes are all buttoned up now. So this week's plan is to put the new master on and make the new lines for that, and pull the old gas tank, and put the new one in. And possible tear the motor down the rest of the way and see what I need to do.....

Pretty large compared to the stock 190/150 heads next to them.
Looks like there was some water that got in a few cyl while it was stored so I don't know with the block being 60 over is its gonna be saveable once I hone it. I just hope it's not to badly pitted from the rust. Got all 8 cyl soaked in wd40 right now. Gonna tear the gas tank off tomorrow and put the new one in. If all goes well my sending unit will still be ok.

Pulled the gas tank today. Sending unit is fucked up. No fixing it. Pick up screen was trashed too, so I ordered a new setup on ebay for $35 shipped. Now it's just a hurry up and wait kinda thing. So I'm gonna probably run my brake line for the rears, and paint the engine bay. And try and bleed the brakes over the weekend. On a good note I found the engine chassis mounts sitting in the car.

Saved down the engine bay today and got it painted. Also painted the master cyl and got the lined for that all done and bolted in.

I'll get a better pics soon. I also tore the 327 apart today(no pics will get soon) but it freed up and and pulled apart ok. It had a broken ring on the #8 cyl, and other than that it lookes like a stone hone, some bearings, rings and gaskets, and It will be ready to rock. I wish I knew what cam was in this thing because I can't for the life of me find any info on it.

yeah. I found the wiring harness for the engine bay in the trunk today. Has about as many wires as the drivers side door in my integra. Now if i just knew where they all went...lol

Im totally baffled on this camshaft. I cant find any info on how to read the casting numbers on it, There is castings all over this thing.

Just pulled a quick measurement. Looks like it has a about a .460 lift.... Meh, probably gonna buy a hot cam anyways.

Well, Ive been looking up cams and all that, and to be honest, I think ill just slam this cam back in, and run it. Just had a buddy text me and say hes got a lead on a lq4 for dirty cheap! Like sub $200....

money for cam will be spent on a motor that I actually want to build. Needs a rebuild. But I planned on doing that anyways.

It turned out pretty good. I was a little nervous about the low gloss black, I always use it on car parts, but never on an engine bay, I was afraid it was gonn look like a chalkboard. But once it dried it looked alright. Was a lot of bomb can painting....lol never bomb canned anything this big. Brother in law has been helping me on this project. Kinda kicks me in the ass when I want to call it a day and pushes me to do more....lol tracking number says that my sending unit oft the fuel gauge will be here today. So I should be able to get the tank in tomorrow. And then bleed the brakes and its ready for me to build the motor and drop it in so I can make the transmission crossmember.

Did a little checking of the main bearing clearances. Platigauges them and they were all between .0018 - .0021. Perfect except for the fact it looks like the #1 main has chewed into the bearing a touch. I know its because someone ran there belts to tight, because its in the center of the block side of the bearing. The #2 has worn through and is just starting to hit copper, but its completely smooth and so is the crank, #3 looks ok, #4 same as #2 just starting to ware into the the copper, but its smooth. #5 looks good, but I wasn't able to check the end play because I didn't have a dial indicator, but I'm gonna snag my step dads tomorrow, and check it. Overall though, the crank looks tits.

Tomorrow, Im gonna go grab the a ball hone and hone the shit out of this thing, and then Im gonna hit it with the paint stripper and try and get the rest of the paint off and get it cleaned up and ready for paint, and assembly.

Im kinda on the fence about running those bearings, but they are smooth and fell right into spec.

Make sure you do not get the small journal and large journal p/n mixed up.

SBC bearings are dirt cheap.

I'd honestly have the crank double checked for straightness and have the main bores checked for straightness. Gen1 SBCs are most definitely a blunt tool.

It's a damn cool project nog.

Just gonna order up new mains, and possibly rod bearings. Well see what happens when I check the rod bearings today. But I'm not gonna spend the money to have the crank check for straighteners. Not worth it in my book. This was a running motor, and I'm not trying to spend all my budget on it when I'm gonna just run it for the summer and sell it to fund the lq4 project.

Pretty much. Got frustrated last night and had to walk away for the night. Feel like I'm chasing my tail putting it together and pulling it apart about 6 times now. Gonna measure more bearings today and see what rod bearings I need to order up with the kit. It's just getting old. I'm not really making any forward progress. I think my bro in law is coming over on Friday and he will kick me in the ass to get things moving along.

Well had a great evening working on Shit. I cleaned up the garage and averaged everything and cleared off the work bench. Measured all my bearing thicknesses, and journals. Everything checked out perfect. So I'm back over to saying Fuck it, I'm just gonna run the bearings. So tomorrow goal is todo the final scrub down of the block and put the crank and cam it for the last time. Then start cleaning up all the pistons. And gonna order up rings tonight.

It's your engine so do what you wish. But I would not put #1 bearing back in, it has been a few years since the last time I built a sbc, but it seems to me you can get jobber bearings for like ~$25.
