sounds like something is loose and rattling around in your distributor until it gets jammed in something and snapped those tangs?
IDK I'd open it up and check it out or just swap a new one on.

shit. good call. makes since. but I just drove it 24miles to work. then lunch and back... kinda scares me but hope it solves the noise... I'll update ya...

I've never seen it break those tabs and nothing else, but I've seen it take out sensors or pickups before.
especially in the chinamen knock off distributors where the screws back out if they're loose, or the head pops off cause they're tight.

I'm curious what caused it as well though

yeah. unless the bearing seizes or something gets stuck in there it should break those off... I would think.

I'll be off in like  2 hours. sitrep then.

nothing hanging out in there...  all parts accounted for. no shaft play. spins freely. looks OEM inside other than the coil.

still sounds like shit. gonna drive home. let it cool down. try to adjust the valves again. still wouldnt account for distributor failure.

wtf.

fuck..... well i just got done with a 2hour session of valve adjusting... with no help. so fuck. maybe ill swap in another reluctor wheel/bearing setup... why the fuck not?

i also swapped and bled the shit out of the CMC, shit was nasty.... kinda feels like i helped, but didnt really drive it cuz of shit above. just backed it out the garage and back in.

maybe ill drive the uninsured slipping clutch CX to work tomorrow... probably make it there in that...  ::)

Mine was the bearing in the dizzy.  I didn't think I could pull it out. So I got a new dizzy from acuraoemparts.com for $112

I thought the bearings were pressed in.
definitely would help to hear the sound. timing belt tight?
possible slapping and caused the dizzy tabs to break off

I always wondered how you got the screws out to replace the bearing. Is the wheel pressed on?

little status report:  i think the noise is gone.

new issues may have arisen lol.

anyway. tomorrow im gonna finish putting it back together and hope that none of the accessories where causing the noise (was a thought also). but i gave it a min running with no covers, belts, etc.

so not sure i want to comment on what i think was the problem as a couple things came to mind when pulling everything apart. but. i did notice that the timing belt has super light fraying on the edges? and marks on my new fuckin timing covers where it was rubbing?!?! crank pulley was tight, not sure where it could wonder?

So did you forget The big guide washer that keeps it from wondering or did you over tighten it?

nope. not that newb of a mistake. washer was there and 99% sure installed the right way.

unless the belt was not tight enough (made sure it was tighter) or the alternator/PS pump was making the noise? i still havent hooked those up...

also i did double check that the timing was good. and it was still dead on, no skipped teeth...

Good spring there? I've seen people have worn out springs and it not pull the belt tight and it slaps around.

my new hate is valve adjustments... i think it was suspension work before that.

valves suck too, Never really bothered me doing suspension work except when I was working at an alignment place.

Was the timing belt centered on the cam gears? I've never heard of them rubbing on the covers unless the belt was loose or not centered. other than the rubbing does the belt still look new.
Oh and I've had an alternator sound similar to valve noise before.

i dont know how the belt wouldnt be centered. but it is tighter now that it was before. belt looks new other than the light amount of fray. im 98% sure it will be fine. i did note that i have a used belt, but mine still looks better, if it had jumped time i would have changed it forsure.

alternator still isnt hooked up... about to go work on it now. but i took it to the autoparts store to test before i bolted it up, tested fine, didnt make any noise. and i used it cuz it is a OEM Honda unit. (turned out that the B16 has an OEM unit also. bonus)

so let me try to update this for non-beach house users before i start drinking...

finished this up wed morning. started right up. sounded nice. maybe a hint of noise or maybe im spitting hairs.

so i go take it for a spin once warmed up.

i take my usual route around town to easy escape back home if i forget to tighten my lugnuts or something. all is good, so i head it out more open road.

i get on it good and it seems slow with and odd miss/clutch slip feel at like 6k?? i go down a little bit more down the road and try to watch the wideband, this time when it gets there it just sputters/noise/etc like the timing belt is shredding and bending all the valves...
i did say fuckit after a couple mins and give it another try with similar sounds.

i call around, decide to walk my happy ass back home to get the Galant and some tools. its probably a little over a mile... more than i have walked my lazy ass in years.

i pull the covers, belt is there and intact. but seems to have way more slack on the pulleys side than when i just put it together (did i mention that i watched it run with NO covers at all and had very little belt deflection before i put it back together? cuz i did). i bump it up to TDC and the intake cam is...retarded? on the exhaust side about 1 tooth... should run like that?!?! so i pull the belt off, spend way too much time trying to reset it (im on the side of the road, limited tools, no jack, in the light rain).

i get the belt to my liking. fires right off. i call a buddy, give him the update. try to get it on speaker for him to listen. agrees it sounds ok, not perfect, but would rather hear in person. i rev it a little. ehh. i wrap it out a good some (5-6k im guessing) and I WATCH THE FUCKER JUMP TEETH ON THE INTAKE SIDE... fuck, fuck.

amazingly it lands almost TDC. exhaust cam is dead nuts, intake is like 90 fuckin deg towards the firewall...  :-X :'(

talk wiht my buddy some more, say fuckit. yank that cam back. reset the belt again. throw all my shit in the galant. jump in the car fires off.... yes, no joke still firing off just fine... go to make a 4pt turn (oh yeah lowered on 17s lol) CEL comes on, i think it stalled, or maybe i shut it off, but couldnt check codes, so back to FUCKIT. and rolled out... quick shifted it all the way to 4th at like 20mph, and coasted home with the 4way flashers on... oh yeah, plan was it only was doing it at 5k plus RPMs, right? seemed to play out.

still reading? do i make any sense?...

i just pulled all the caps (one at a time) on the intake side. all look fine. no scoring or metal transfer, etc. pulled the distributor back off, spins fine. but i swapped back to the OG bearing/center section cuz it it did this shit after i swapped it. so fuck, for giggles back to the other...

thoughts?...    shit i didnt do a compression test before or after yet. still wanna do that. dont know how much vacuum its pulling. i dont have the shit for a leakdown test...  thinking of just throwing a good looking used belt i have on and giving it another try....

timing belt was brand new OEM Honda.

water pump was used OEM Honda, ~105k. spun great. hell it was given to me by a tech at honda.

tensioner was used OEM. idk. probably off the motor. ~208k. spun fine or i wouldnt have put it on.

now im not guaranteeing these are perfect. just saying...
