24 will work, but is a little thin, and will be easy to dent / re rust. 20 is a better choice.

You realize a TIG welder is the wrong kind of welder for body work, right?  It should be spot or mig welded.  TIG welding you're just going to burn holes.

Not true. Yeah mig is whats used by most. But i have never burned holes when i tig weld thin sheet. I reworked a set of gay ass z3 fenders and never had a problem.

Agreed, there is a local guy here that does custom widebody work for older Porsche junks and he uses a TIG. He works magic.

I have done some body work with my tig and never had any problems. I usually use my mig though. It's a lot easier and quicker

This is always the reason for mig.

+1. I pretty much always use my mig. The tig probably gets 5% of my welding time, if that.

4x8 sheet is 40 bucks

and they say they have a scrap pile so i can get more material to practice on for cheap

better than the jews who wanted 60 a sheet and were selling me scrap pieces that no one else would have fucking bought by the pound priced the same as regular fucking stock

Yes, Matt is telling you to get more practice before you weld on thin sheet that is attached to your car and supposed to be either cosmetic, structural, or functional.   Practice with some shit on some other shit, see if you can catch on before you work on your car.

^^^This

Also 20 gauge is VERY thin. I still struggle welding that thin stuff and have it come out decent looking. You have to weld it way low on amps probably in the 20-30 amp range (passenger would know better then i would here).

It's NOT for the novice who has yet to master doing a bevel properly yet alone welding something that doesn't look like dog shit. You don't have nearly the proper setup to begin to weld that stuff. If i were to tell you proper sheilding gas is important on sch10 SS then on 20g anything it's about 20 times more important.

1/2 thinner sheet isn't twice as easy to burn holes in. It's 20 times easier. It's inversely, expotentially proportional to the 8th power.

you got to be super fast on the filler application with that thin stuff. i was just welding a catch can made from one of those stainless water bottles and it was really hard as that shit is like tin foil, that and my welder only goes down to 30 amps.
