i can't update the "other forum" thread because i've been banned. oh well.
slightly modified, but all the pics are here.
ok, i've been working on this for a couple years. i only recently got all 4 wheels back on the car (temporarily so i can move the car because i'm moving shop). i will update with more detailed pics once things become more permanent.
here is where i started. 1989 crx si that i've owned for 12 years. 2000 ap1 f20c. s14 jdm rear end with viscous type lsd. when i bought the drivetrain, it came with the rear end complete, except for the subframe. i'd researched that the stock s2000 rear ends were not that happy being abused so i was able to sell it all and get the s14 complete rear end for 2/3rds what i sold the s2000 rear for. more money for the project.

i already had a dh-racing tb so i figured i'd bore the intake for it.

i haven't had a chance to take any recent pics because i'm moving my shop, but once everything is moved i'll get some more pics up.
right now the car is together, because i had to move my shop and put 4 wheels on it to move the car along with everything else. the engine and rear end are coming out probably early next week so i can use them for an upcoming show i have a booth at.
the rear suspension needs some adjustment because some of my measurements were off, but nothing serious. also, i'm trying to source some softer springs because the current springs are far too stiff (700lb/in). i'm looking for something in the 200 range.

-
Good to see you here Aaron. Thanks for the flanges their gonna work out awesome

-

-
that is super bad ass ;D
-
that mount/crossmember is the shit
glad to see you here
-
You ever check out speedwaymotors as they've got a boatload of different lengths and rates of springs. Maybe they might or maybe not but it's worth a check.
-
holy fuck awesome. the rear suspension is sick nasty.

Speedway is the the shit. I get all my heims from them. And oil lines.......(sorry Steve)
-
Oh nice....... love it
-
your a sick fuck amazing work RHMT to the FULLEST
-
in itself, that is the cleanest CRX I've ever seen. RWD turbo f20 is a shit ton of icing on the cake. Good luck with getting this thing going!
-
Arron, What kind of springs and shocks are those? Amazing work as usual.
-
aaron you can adjust the cantilever ratio to soften your springs..
i was thinking that too, right now it looks like hes at 1:1 ratio. aarron go take a physics lesson
-
And THIS is why this is the real HMT
-
That might just be THE coolest CRX ever made.
-
Awesome project. Can't wait to see it run.
i'd researched that the stock s2000 rear ends were not that happy being abused...
They indeed do not. They're made of very fine glass:

the problem here is that there is not enough stroke in the shock assembly. i've done some reading (not enough) and i don't think you will be doing much more than changing the travel of the suspension rather than change the spring rate.
-
damn, looks even better when its all just put together in the first post :D and all on the same page.
-
Damn how did I miss this build? I thought it was sweet already that youre putting an F20. But damn, the bitch is boosted too!! Very nicely done!
MantisX
-
is this going to be a straight line car?
regardless, i want it so bad! :?:
-
for the most part, the car is going to be a street car. it may evolve into something over time, but once it is complete, i just want to drive it and get re-familiarized with the car.
here are some shots detailing the cross member/subframe and the bottom link steering.

You have your priorities backwards because you live in a horse fucking community...
This is JUST a tad more interestoing then the Chevelle faggot
-
Hey arron after you get this done and all you need to put it into some sort of magazine. But dont let the magazine know about rHMT. We will than have to set hotrex and bdv on sniper duty and take care of the flood of noobs we will get if you do.
-
Honda Tuning would take this in a minute. Yeah theyre all about pretty but you cant deny the awesome of this thing.

Mr. Weir... how much was your f20c setup if you don't mind my asking?
included in the initial purchase:
ap1 f20c complete with a/c compressor, all accessories
tranny complte with clutch/flywheel, etc.
wiring harness
wrong ecu :P
driveshaft
rear diff, axles, spindles, brakes, control arms, struts (basically the whole rear end except for the subframe and wheels).
cost: $3700.
i sold the rear end for $750
that brings the cost down to $2950
i bought the s14 rear end for $500
back up to $3450
i had bought a spare ap1 engine/tranny and ended up selling it for $1400 because compression was low on cyl's 2 and 4, but i still made a bit of money on it.
i just got a package in the mail from xenocron with my aem ems, 1000cc injectors and competition clutch stage 5 clutch and 11.5lb flywheel.

Sounds ike its GOTTA be getting close now..

Aaron, do you have any concerns with flex in the aluminum components? Do you plan on some sort of heat treatment? I know that welding makes the aluminum soft.
AWESOME CANUCK PROJECT....! O0
phil
-
Wow, its really come far! I like how you decided to use so much aluminum, that's not seen often at all.
THe one issue I see is in the rear suspension. When you look at how it will pull at the top of the shock towers, it could deform some of your aluminum, as well as the frame. The original design spread all the force into the outter area of the tophat, and pushed on that area - yours will be pulling, in addition to some side-loading. If nothing else, I'd put another 2-4 mounts in the design, kinda like those useless trunk x-braces people get.
-
love the built i want to mae mt awd wagovan a s2k rwd but funds dont let me. good luck
-
yeah, that rear suspension is probably going to be completely rebuilt. i had to get it in the car quick so i could move the car. i may not modify it much, but will definitely beef it up. the springs that are in it now are just too stiff.
did a compression check on the engine today finally after 2 years...
1 = 175
2 = 175
3 = 210
4 = 160
also did a leak down test and 1, 2 and 4 are leaking loud enough to hear them. i'm not an engine guy, but i've had opinions that it needs a valve job and also that it has been a few years since the engine has run, so that may contribute to the poor test... i have no clue.
-
Over fill it with a bit more oil. Use the starter to crank it for 5-10min then retry.
-
right now there is no fluid in it at all. we sprayed a bit of wd40 in the cylinders and the compression seemed to go up a bit. i suppose it could use some oil in it.
-
uhh yea, thats a decent idea
does that motor's oil pump run off the crank?
-
any way you can prime it without turning the motor over, like an older dizzy v-8?
-
Over fill it with a bit more oil. Use the starter to crank it for 5-10min then retry.
good idea if he wants to possibly cook his starter. i'd rather not take that chance, air tools are much more durable over that timespan
A starters job is to crank. Joe had a d15 that set for years out site. He could not even crank it, they had to use a super big pipe to brake her lose, same motor put out 205hp non intercooled, also ran a 12.2 if I remember right. Need less to say dump some oil in her and crank over by hand then with either air/ power/ or starter power.
-
i had a pontiac 400 that had sit for god knows how long and it was seized. we dumped a gallon of kerosene down the IM, came back a month later, put it in gear and pushed it and the fan moved. changed the oil, started and ran like a champ
IF that engine had the ability, i would prim the oiling system by just rotating the oil pump, then install everthing except the plug wires and the fuel pump fuse and build oil pressure with the starter for a bit. i think that woudl be the safest route. but it doens't look like thats possible
-
You can prime the pump, but it's a major PITA. You have to pull the crank pulley, chain covers, chain, etc to unchain it from the crank. It does run off of its own small chain, but it's behind the timing chain.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv356%2Fmanitowic999%2FTimingChain.jpg&hash=a834583f8860dc2e62200cf113862c89d415765f)
-
You could just get a pump and plumb into the oil pressure switch. It wouldn't be that difficult.
-
Or you could just stop listening to these guys and run it. If it runs like shit then rebuild/build.. I've had jdm engines come with low tests and right after running for 15-20 minutes they test out fine.

you could install an oil accumulator...

The mystery jdm smoke. I agree I have gotten plenty of jdm motors that on start up were hardly beauties. After a couple hard runs the mystery jdm smoke goes away and they run fine. I agree just throw it in.
-

you mean no fluid in the cylinder at all....right? of course you do....you must
fwiw, when i picked up my 92 si it had been sitting outside behind a casino for 2+ years.
- Changed oil to royal purple, pulled plugs put some oil in each cyl.
- let sit for about an hour and then put in a bit more.
- craked it loose by hand then cranked the starter till the oil light went out on the dash.
- reassembled and she fired right up smoked lots then cleaned up not long after.
not sure why your compression numbers would vary like that... how many revolutions did you do during the test? Is there any way you can run it for a while then recheck the comp? I realize that might be a dumb question given the photos.
-
This build is top notch, nice welding mask too... :noel:

i was under the impression that the exporters oil the cylinders when they pull/hack the engines out

A good importer will put oil in the cylinders, but I've only came across 2 engines that where oiled down.

Let's see some CRX drifting already! or at least a start up. Something anything please

this probably isn't update worthy, but its something. a little while ago my suspension guru friend came over and we figured out the suspension travel to spring travel ratio. i can't even remember what it's called... sprung rate or something like that. that's why he's the guru and i'm just a welder with tools.
you setup two indicators. one on the rotor where the wheel mounts and the other on the strut mounting point. then you raise and lower the wheel through it's suspension travel and check to see what the numbers do. for mine they stayed the same, so the ratio is 1:1. this makes tuning the suspension a bit easier since there is less math involved.
anyway, here are some pics and how we did it.

i will update this week. the tranny tunnel frame work should be done by friday easily.
-
Damn. Vacations are good. But we need to see progress... You just dont throw a rwd boosted s2000 swapped crx in our face and not expect us to get antsy.
-
things are kinda quiet at the shop this week, so i had some time to do some work. the tranny tunnel framework is all tacked together... some of it welded at the front. i just need to make the tranny mount, then i can pull it out and weld it all up, then cover in sheet metal and weld that all up, then i can put it back in, weld it and start on the drive shaft tunnel which won't be as high. yeah, i know the camera sucks.

-
Looking good. How are you going to set up your gas peddle Assembly?
the brake pedal arm will be bent/modified, and so will the gas. i already knew i was going to have to do that when i first test fit everything. it might make it easier for heel/toe action!
-
Ahhhh lookin' good.
-
man, that is a serious trans tunnel!

Looking good. How are you going to set up your gas peddle Assembly?

so will with CDM ebay pedals
-
With the transmission tunnel being so high the shifter should be at a great hight and if you set it up you can rest your arm on the tunnel of the driveline. Ive driven a few s2000's and I love the shifter hight and how close it is to the stearing wheel.
-
yeah the seating and shifter/wheel position of the s2000 is pretty much perfect.
-
nice. i like. this is way better than that other kids midengine setup.

For Drag?
what for a waste :?:
but awesome work
-
For Drag?
what for a waste :?:
but awesome work
I see this car doing better in a road race than built fwd crx. I bet it will have a better dist. of weight vs the fwd setup. If he can get all of the suspention stuff setup right it will handle great.
-
actually, the weight distribution should be pretty good... although a bit heavier than an oem crx, the fwd setup has the whole engine/tranny between the front wheels. the tranny on this setup will sit behind them giving the car a much better center of gravity. but yeah, i don't really know how the car is going to handle until i get it on the road. the car is not being built for drag, it is being built for the street first and foremost. i may drag it, drift it, autocross it or time attack it... they way i see it, the car will be able to do just about anything i want it to. as long as it puts a smile on my face, i won't care.
-
as long as it puts a smile on my face, i won't care.
Im sure it will put a smile on your face. ;D
I know it would put one on mine. On another note I realy wish that the 97-01 preludes were rear wheel drive. They just look like a rear wheel drive car.
-
as long as it puts a smile on my face, i won't care.
Im sure it will put a smile on your face. ;D
And if it doesn't he can give it to me. :D
-
Awesome.. An update. Sucks about the gas/brake pedal issue. But the craftsmanship on the tunnel is top notch. How are you going to work the trans mount?
PS; Why the fuck isnt this stickied?
-
Why did you go so heavy duty on the trans tunnel? Some bent sheet metal would saved some weight and money...
-
Why did you go so heavy duty on the trans tunnel? Some bent sheet metal would saved some weight and money...
if i was a dope fabricator and access to all of what aaron has, i would of done the same shit...only cause i could

This is what's so great about this build, this car can do pretty much anything and be very good at it. I'd expect this to thrash people in autox and even lap days on a bigger circuit. I'm sure suspension set up will take some time to get right but that's fun stuff.
ps. super jealous of your fab skills, fucken dope.
-
Why did you go so heavy duty on the trans tunnel? Some bent sheet metal would saved some weight and money...
because i value life. removing that section of the original exhaust tunnel is like taking out a key structural portion of the car. if i were to get into any kind of collision, a plain sheet metal tunnel would fold up like paper without proper reinforcement. you have to remember, i still have to cut out the e-brake section too for the driveshaft... basically i'm cutting the belly of the car in half. without some sort of rigid support it would make it pretty weak and prone to flexing. eventually there will probably be a cage put in, but not right away. also, keep in mind the tranny mount is part of the tunnel as well, so it needs to atleast hold the ass end of the drivetrain without moving excessively.
i don't think weight will be much of a factor in a car that is 2100lbs to begin with and is going to have 450whp on tap.
as for saving money, $25 worth of steel is a good investment for piece of mind.
-
Any proper spaceframe car has a transmission tunnel built like that.
-
because i value life.
;D pussy
life is overrated!

the tranny tunnel is complete. for now it is just tacked in place. i want to pull the mockup drivetrain out to weld it in fully. i'm going to have to patch up a couple spots where there are small gaps, but i don't think it is too serious.
i threw the dash and the steering wheel back in just for reference. if i can modify the center console to fit over the tunnel, i will.

Simply amazing work! cant wait to see this finished.
-
fucking pimp right there. i love the fab work you do.
-
this should be the official RHMT car when it's done.
-
better yet, this is how the CRX should have come from the factory :noel:
-
are you welding the tunnel in or are those tabs just to bolt it in.
-
ope nevermind. i see now. haha
-
cool ass project. crx and preludes should of came this way. fwd sux
-
crazy project cant wait to see this finished
-
What are you doing for exhaust stuff?
I vote CRX2000 of Death style. S362 sticking out of the hood. O0
-
not much of an update, but the tunnel is 99% welded in. i've been doing some body work on smoothing out the engine bay. i really dislike doing this stuff. i'm not very good with bondo, but here is the bay all primed up. i still need to smooth over a couple spots, then the primer sealer will go on and some paint. i'm planning on further reinforcing the firewall once the paint is dry.

naw he should call it the CRs2000
-
But there is already a CR S2000.. There is one at the local Honda stealership for like 45 or something ridicules
-
he should call it a crx. it is what it is. you dont call it a crx-integra when you swap in a b18
-

Ya but the b series in a rex is a common thing. The CRX2000 is unique and not your average go go speed racer swap.

made a while ago. cnc'd from solid billet.

very perceptive. i cut it off the spare one i had.

more of that intake manifold. it just needs a vac manifold welded on and a bracket for the throttle cable. then off to polishing.

Shit's weak.. too small. Just kidding quality as always.
About the steel vanguard rods.. I'll just go with the ARC aluminums whenever I decide to build it, I have other priorities a little more important than custom mower engine rods at the moment. I hope you'll understand ;)
it happens. no worries, i didn't invest much time into it.

sure, i've got a spare bed.

well, i didn't get as much done as i had hoped this weekend. i'm out of mix gas for the mig, so i was stuck having to tig everything which was ok for control, but very time consuming.
i trimmed the rear bottom section of the trunk off since it isn't going to be used and i welded a small 1/2" by 3/4" rectangular 1/6" wall tube across the back.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fweirtech.ca%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fuserpics%2F10001%2Fnormal_DSC00854.JPG&hash=e6f0d0d30423a0d7715da7c1a4c49f37663b2627)
tig welding this thing all the way across took just way to long. i gotta get some mig gas on monday.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fweirtech.ca%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fuserpics%2F10001%2Fnormal_DSC00853.JPG&hash=aded24f21843d73e4d29347af7c5a3389b3a0240)
here is the inside view. a flat piece of sheet metal will line up with the bottom of the tube bar which should make for an easy patch for the big hole in the trunk.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fweirtech.ca%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fuserpics%2F10001%2Fnormal_DSC00852.JPG&hash=41efe0c46e37dacdd2decb6a474f5c00c2e73e14)
here is the driver's side wheel arch about 95% complete.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fweirtech.ca%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fuserpics%2F10001%2Fnormal_DSC00851.JPG&hash=db5e7d8cba4abf0cea34771a06bb4a790fc6753a)
tig welding this in was a real bitch. i cut and fit the pieces, then tacked them altogether in the car and then pulled it out and welded all the way around and stuck it back in the car so i could weld it in.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fweirtech.ca%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fuserpics%2F10001%2Fnormal_DSC00850.JPG&hash=beeed714d46c551c9967a653b648b98bfabf9e84)
here is the wheel well view. this isn't a very good pic... you can't really see much of the welds
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fweirtech.ca%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fuserpics%2F10001%2Fnormal_DSC00849.JPG&hash=ebcf9a7ac3d5f3fd417ff0a3359bdf02a254abf8)

Dude, that is a LOT of work. Hope it turns out to be a sweet ride. But you could have made it easier on your self buy getting something rear wheel drive in the first place. Like a Mustang :noel: Plus you get to start with a LOT bigger motor: a 3.8 or a WHOPPING 4.6 ;D

but why take the easy road like everyone else? and why not use a motor that is capable of making as much power and weighs only a fraction of a v8?

The 3.8 motor fails and is slow as balls. 4.6 is nice.

update time. this shit is still warm.
rear frame work is complete. i just need to cut some sheet and weld it in there to cover the hole. it is going to be flat, so it should be pretty basic. once that is done, then the hand brake section of the tunnel will be raised for the driveshaft. that should take care of all the serious fab work.

Dude....yes...dude

how do you make sure its all in there straight or should i say perpendicular
-
how do you make sure its all in there straight or should i say perpendicular
the front is no biggie because the new subframe was made from a jig that was made off the oem subframe.
the rear, i got luck on (and was actually easier than the front). i haven't posted pictures yet, but there are two small plates bolted into the pivot bushing mounting points from the original trailing arms. those plates have the holes in them that the s14 rear subframe is bolted into. because they are mounted symmetrically in the frame rails of the car, i just made the plates a mirror image of each other. that takes care of making the rear end straight in 2 axis and also centers it from side to side. the 3 axis is a no brainer. i just had to make it somewhat level at the rear of the subframe. i made the 2" square cross piece that it bolts into, bolted it onto the subframe, then welded the bar into the frame rails at the back. there was no need to do any plumb bobbing or anything like that.
-
i've got a couple buddies working on the wiring. i don't have the patience or probably the mental capacity to map out all this shit. here is the beginning anyway. it'll be much cleaner once it is all done. they do shit oldschool with a candle instead of a heat gun for the shrink tubing.

that was a mistake i had done when the car was painted the second year i owned it (1997). i also had the door handles and the washer nozzles shaved. i'd love to replace the quarters with some oem ones, but i don't think i'd find any in as good a shape as mine unless i bought them new.
-
I'm not sure it's a mistake. Looks clean, but it's hard to say for sure with no bumper and the hood open

I actually seen that CRX a few years ago in quelph, had a big WEIR sticker across the hood, not gonna lie Im not a big fan of the corners. But I cant wait to see this s2k swap

spot putty in the engine bay tonight. i can really appreciate the effort that goes into what body work guys do. this stuff is really time consuming to do it right... i think i'll give the engine bay a final sand and then it'll be ready for some paint.

ok, i got excited and bolted in the rear end. the beauty part is that it isn't coming out again!
this is where the fuel cell is going, right behind the diff.

fuck no, they're weak sauce. this is an s14. cheaper, more plentiful and lots more options for upgrades too.

Awesome.

i personally never liked spot putty. i'm probably retarded, but i always just had better luck using straight up bondo and taking longer that way sanding
-
looks bad ass man. wish I could get that motivated to work on my own shit
-
i think i would fully mock up the car before paint. if you still have to fab turbo stuff things could get scratched.
i personally never liked spot putty. i'm probably retarded, but i always just had better luck using straight up bondo and taking longer that way sanding
spot putty is perfectly fine in small amounts. if you try to use it to fill something too big, it shrinks and takes forever to dry.
-
viscous type.
The s14 is the better choice considering strength & replacement cost. The lockup won't be as aggressive as a geared or clutch type, but it'll still do the job as long as the fluid is still viable. Hopefully it didn't come out of a m4d JDM drifter-mobile. They tend to overheat those viscous diffs and gum it up.
This is looking very, very nice. Being a perfectionist will pay off.

FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP............

should use blue hardener i prefer a little bit of evercoats glaze in the half gallon its what i use at work. looks fantastic though!

I agree about mocking everything up before painting. I've learned the hard way. I swear I think if I don't paint something then it will work fine, if I paint it then something will be off and I'll have to redo it.
Sick build BTW. I guess that's the entire s14 subframe. Looks good.
-
Very nice work, sir. This thing is finally getting done.
-
idk if you have mentioned it, how much power are you after? and what do you think of the transmission?? will it hold up alright? from what i've read the rear diff and transmissions are weak, but you have a different diff so you're good there. i'd like to know more about the s2k shit i may get into one.
-

the transmission should be ok for the 450-500 i'm after. you can research it a bit on www.s2ki.com (http://) or www.s2kca.com (http://) keep in mind my car will probably end up lighter than an s2k, so that may help with the strain on it. as long as i don't do too many hard launches i should be ok. i imagine without slicks it is just going to spin anyway and not hook up good enough to have much impact. maybe i'll have to push it and see how long it will last. i do have a spare that i can rebuild as well if i need to.
-
yea, i'd really like to buy one but it just sucks that they have weak ass rear ends.

Make sure you record that. Haha. Would love to see. Hopefully you get this build up and running soon.
-
As light as this thing will be, I doubt you'll have problems with breaking the drivetrain.
-
well, i had a chance to cut out the hand brake section for the driveshaft. it is going to have to go up about 4"... higher than i had initially thought.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fweirtech.ca%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fuserpics%2F10001%2FDSC00934.JPG&hash=8d3aedcf207c2794c360ec53703e5909b9e1d6cc)
and here is a shot of the tranny mounts, there isn't going to be much room for the exhaust, but i'm sure i'll figure something out:

I think I just wet myself.
-
when will the conversion kit be available?
-
for him to do something like that there would have to be an X amount of people that wanted it and paid up front. and would prolly be expensive. and you'd still have to install rear end and suspension on your own and hack up your car.
-
Finally an update. Any more pics?

Tranny mounts are pro. Looks awesome.

he's too busy playing battlefield bad company 2 lol
Fuck that's what I'm doing. Played that shit for 4 hours last night
-
c'mon, i just got it today. i haven't even opened it yet.
i'm going on vacation for a week starting thursday. i should have an update when i get back. the driveshaft is out right now being made and i should get my lines/fittings for the brakes/fuel lines when i get back. fuel cell is started, just need to weld bungs on, mount it and figure out what i want to do for a fuel level sender. i'm probably going to go with the autometer setup.
-
what do you think its going to be like for weight distribution aaron?
with all that square in the rear i think maybe even close to 55/45?
-
it is hard to say really. there is probably more weight in tubing in the tranny tunnel than the rear end. also, keep in mind there is going to be a heavy turbo setup over the front wheels as well. but yeah, normally on a ff, the tranny is in front of the wheels. with this it is behind the firewall. the s14 rear end is surprisingly heavy and i don't have the axles or brakes in it yet. i'm hoping to keep the weight somewhere around 2300lbs with the range you suggest, 55% front, 45% rear. i've got 245 tires for the rear and 205's for the front on order also. once they arrive, i'll be looking for wheels with the right offset.
-
Hell yeah dude. Can't wait for updates.
-
I think it's going to be closer to 50/50. Just look how the engine sits with regard to the front wheels.
-
ya no shit, i got called on doing that, so now it on....hurry up weir ;D
-
i'll post a small update later today.
-
I deleted all the spamming and post whoring in this thread. Post whore in GD, there's no reason to ruin this thread. :-\

i don't have time to work on this thing at all right now. i have a pile of parts waiting to go back on it, but i need to finish the tunnel first and throw some paint in the engine bay.
just a shot of the mock up engine to shut you fuckers up.

Wasn't the fix for the pintos was some kind of quick disconnect that keeps the fuel in the tank if hit in the rear end.
Mustangs still have there gastanks behind the rearend and near the rear bumper.
If you are behind most of them you can see the fuel tanks as part of the bottom of the car.

The fix for Pintos was hiatus. Permanently.

I want a early 70's boosted mercury bobcat

Yeah my whole problem with gas tank being exposed under the rear bumper is that, When the world desends into madmax style road warrior times I don't want my tank exposed to enemy fire arrows or the occasional gun shot.

my father in law (who is also my business partner) is great at making little brackets and all sorts of odd little pieces. i had him make this up because the engine sits too close to the firewall, the sensor needs to point down.

chop the tang off the sensor and it would definatley look factory

The will that clear the manifold stud with harness hooked to it?

yes, it is just the angle of the pic. it will clear. if it is tight, i will pull the stud and bolt it.
i wanted the fuel tank as big as i could get because this is going to be a street car and i will probably go on the occasional road trip with it. according to my calculations it should be around 50L i believe. i may actually add a couple straps running under it from side to side.

The tunnel has more rigidity to it than most bolt on cage bullshits.
-
It serves as a jack point. You could probably center the jack up and pick the whole car up by the tunnel. ::thumbs up dicks hard::
-
Never owned a CRX, eh? You can lift three wheels off the ground by jacking one corner, they are pretty rigid to begin with. Soft in the middle so you can't jack there stock, sure, but pretty close to what you are thinking of already.
-
Was thumbing through some mags at wally world the other day and picked up import tuner (I think) they had a rear wheel drive EG with an S2K swap in it. Those bastards. Yours however does look much better.

True Story. Painters are the flakiest of the car crowd.

right next to welders.
-
well, this guy is no different. i just cannot afford the time to deal with unreliable and disrespectful people. he didn't come back to do the paint and didn't feel it important enough to call or send an email to let me know what's up. i've already got a friend i trust getting me some paint. i'll pick up a gun and do it myself.
the shitty part for him is that now he owes me $600 for a turbo manifold for his bike if he wants it back. the original agreement was for him to paint the bay and floor inside in exchange for a turbo setup on his bike. a pretty good deal considering i had already done all the fill work on the bay. all he's done to this point is sand/clean it and spray some primer.
-
Sounds like a hell of a deal. I am a painter of sorts, not your typical alcoholic, slack ass car painter. I have done lots of cars though so I know what goes into it.
-
Make sure you pay him in KEYSTONES. Painters <3 cheap dirty bathwater beer.
fixed,
that sucks about your painted usually its not painters haha its just the person themselves, when someone asks me to do something i usually get it done before they expect it or when i told them. but i dont paint at work at all, frame, sheetmetal work and MUD, paint at home, well hope you can pull it off! its a bay and its white should be a no brainer, base/clear im assuming?
-
Shoulda flown me up there.
-
my friend just dropped off some paint for me. 5 cans of color matched enamel and a can of base. i'm going to use the bombs in the bay and the can of base in the car on the floor as it won't need clear.
-
This thing is gonna be nuttier than a squirrel turd.
:P
-
basecoat with no clear wont last. it needs something to seal it
-
any paint that comes from a rattle can is shit, you need to buy a gun and mix some up with hardner/reducer. You will thank me later, the premix bombs are not the same.
-
Yeah, you really should just spray it with a gun and skip the bombs. Its only the engine bay Aaron, just paint it yourself.
-
base clear is the only way your work in the bay will be able to be noticed, white base/clear shaved bays are nice.

question: should i paint the floor inside white like the engine bay, or black with rocker guard or something?... i'm not going to be able to get the carpet back in it for obvious reasons.

Preparing to fap...
-
I can't see the pics at work , but you could section the carpet if you really wanted.
Cut out the tunnel area of the carpet
cover the tunnel in Sub box material and rock on (if you want)
I stripped and painted my floors white - then clear'd them. A ton of work - but looks good ..and this is your "Shop" car. If I had more time I would come out and help Dustin.
-
Just curious why you chose that particular location for the battery. I know that's a tiny, much lighter battery than the typical one (Odyssey PC680?), but just seems kind of odd to have any bit of weight at the corner of the car :D
Can't wait to see this done.
-
yeah, i know. i just don't want to put it in the cabin... (it is getting a rear seat). i want to keep the engine bay clean too, so in the fender it goes. all the wiring is on that side of the bay, so that keeps it simple.
-
You can have a carpet kit buit at an upholstery shop. We do it often with 30's and 40's cars with firewall and floor mods.
-
Bedliner for the inside floor. FTW
-
POR15 the floor!
-
Roll of carpet + spray adhesive?
-
Bedliner would add way to much wieght.
Por-15 doesn't stick to good metal,only rust.
Could def build your own carpet kit tho.
Pro tip: a steamer will help form the carpet around the tunnel. And don't try to build in 1 piece.
-
yeah, i've discussed it with my decal guy, dustin, and i'm going to go with something a little different. floor is painted!

i would have just rolled on a thin coat of bed liner, nice a durable and wont scratch/scuff up
but wtf do i know telling anything to a man who put a f20 in a CRX LOL

Damn crx keeps looking better!

Dual reservoir is sweeeet!

sooo sick

Youu didn't do a hydro clutch conversion?
kinda what i was thinking, i wish i can remember the name of the place in chicago that has the kit, doesnt jorsher or somethig run it? with the master under the dash?

That brake cyl bracket looks like it would break over time. It's too thin/ long with no cross support.

Sonem/Suja 1 Motoring hydro conversion.
I like it with the exception of one thing. I had to adjust the master cylinder out all the way to get some semblence of "normal" pedal height, and it's still not enough. Pedal engages at the very top. Not a bad thing, I suppose, but annoying. Could just be my setup or master cylinder. I'd try to extend the rod or something if it wasn't such a pain in the ass to get to.
-
this thing should kick some ass, hopefully there will be an update soon!
-
i'm pretty confident the twin mc setup will hold up just fine. the same setup is in the twin charged civic that i did. they've had the setup for a couple years now and regularily beat on the car with no issues.
so, i got me some arp extended studs and popped 'em in. the fronts are pretty standard, but because i'm going with the 4x100 949racing wheels i had to modify the rear hubs and rotors.

i know, i feel the same, but i can't afford or find a carbon bumper, and i think the front end might look silly with a white bumper & carbon hood & fenders.

too bad the car isnt gunmetal, then the bumper would look fine painted

The solution to that would be to paint the whole thing white. :P
paint it you ricer.
-
paint would mean extra weight and extra $ which i'd rather put toward a home brew carbon diffuser...
-
Hmmmmm.... Trade diffuser for manifold? Not sure if I'd like to take on a project that big, but possibly. Time during the day has become scarce
-
paint it all....
what's up with the hood? SiR style with US front? think my CRX needs one, current hood hits the motor and is a pos....
-
Hmmmmm.... Trade diffuser for manifold? Not sure if I'd like to take on a project that big, but possibly. Time during the day has become scarce
a diffuser would be far too big to ship. i already have a bolt of carbon to make it myself. just need to get some balsa for the core.
-
I made a hood and shipped it pretty far for $100. I don't think a diffuser would be too much worse.
-

In for the build of this :noel:
-

the problem is that my rad hangs low, and the mounting points would have to be done on the car.
-
I was thinking rear for some reason. Yea, I imagine a front one would be very custom for this car.
-
Cant believe this fucker isnt done yet!
-
I'd rather have the 3M CF wrap all over the car than I would actual CF. The vinyl wrap is of a higher quality.
-
You have to paint the CF. Or sell it and go back to stock because its pointless...

i think it would be funny to have the mismatched colors, that way when you smoke them it will be even more of a suprise. but then again, i'm all go and no show

Paint the hood and fenders too. Problem solved? The vinyl wrap is extra weight too. How much is weight is paint going to add, 3-4 pounds?
-
Paint would weigh about the same as the vinyl. Could be more, depends on who paints it.
-
sorry guys, i haven't had a chance to work on this recently. i do hope to have it put together for a show in early march though. it might be a long shot though...

BADASS!

It don't get much straighter than that.

An Aluminum exhaust would have been more fitting with the theme of the car, but I'm sure that will do the trick.

I'm glad you did the exhaust that way.
Aluminum exhaust = LOUD

And aluminum sinks energy too well. Keep the heat in, push it out the pipe not through it.
-
Whats left?
-
Excellent to see you here Aaron. Thanks for the flanges their want to perform out awesome
-
Well Aaron, your thread you tell him. Lol
-
And aluminum sinks energy too well. Keep the heat in, push it out the pipe not through it.
I have a pretty thick walled aluminum exhaust. Think about what you just typed niggle... After the pulses make there way through the turbine... restriction is the only concern, not the endo/exothermic properties of the fucking exhaust pipe material ;O)
And I do agree Aluminum exhausts tend to be louder... Then again mine is 4" and stops right below the rear seat... HAHAHHA
My car sounds better than Alex or Mitches did with 4" Aluminum exhausts with the mufflers at the end of the system, then again the material they used was WAYYYYYYY fucking thinner too. Both of theirs ran all the way out the rear too...
I have a 4" Magnaflow "race core" muffler right under my shifter...

Are there any more updates on this build?
Am quiet keen to find out what the end result looks like. :)

sorry guys. i'm having to send my injectors back to injector dynamics for testing. i ordered the same time with another friend and his were no good so he sent them back and they tested them and then sent him a new set.
the bs part of it is i have to pay for the testing and only get a refund if they turn out to be no good... even though they fall within the serial number range of known to be questionable (but never recalled) injectors.
that is a fail for injector dynamics in my books.

Do you have the pictures still of the fabrication process? 95% of them in this thread are so old that they are dead.

it spins the tires almost at idle. i think i'm going to have some serious traction issues. i need to get a proper alignment and then get it on the road. right foot is getting itchy.

no time to work on it :( i don't want to tell customers to fuck off so i can finish it. :-\
i need to rebuild the rear suspension, then get an alignment, then the tuning starts.

ill be needing a BMW M10 exhaust flange soon, mister.
:D

Damn. I just read the entire thread on that "other forum" and then came over here to finish reading and all I can say is holy fuck that is sick.
My buddy has a crashed 2000 S2K with a F20c and it makes me want to do this to my CRX haha. I know i'd run into so many problems though so i'll leave mine alone for now. Keep working on this thing! I wanna see some strip videos and some donuts!

Fabrication Life has been posting links to your page on facebook.
thats awesome. i said it on FB and ill say it here, it looks so natural with the back end swinging out. lol
-
DEAD FUCKING SEXY!
Gonna be tough trying to keep it straight with the short wheel base. = FUN
-
;DDD
-
yeah, i couldn't stop laughing at how effortlessly the back end wants to get loose. traction is going to be a serious issue. i think some fatter slicks will be required for the rear on track days. i have a half bar spring in the wg and haven't even cracked it open yet. i'm definitely not going to put more boost in it than that. i won't be able to use it. there are still a few small issues i need to work out. the rear suspension squats more than 2" under acceleration so i need to lift the back end up a bit. that is easy enough to do though. there are also a few rattles i need to get rid of.
thanks guys,
aaron
-
What are you running for rear tires now? Maybe just stiffer springs in the rear will help
-
i do want the back end to squat to help with traction. the tires are 225/40/15 rs3's. i may need to get some 275 hoosiers for track days.
-
I just came.
-
Simply badass!
-
i was waiting for a little donut action in the vid. :'(

That thing looks like its a riot to drive. Sorta like the low-grip tires on the new toyobaru's, it lets you do stupid and fun things at like 15-20mph, lol.
-
Time to tub it and go 10.5 on the rear.
-
yeah, it doesn't take much throttle to spin the tires. just tapping it mid turn makes it swing like that. it is going to take some time before i get comfortable enough with the handling before i start doing some serious hooning. maybe in a big empty parking lot. it loses traction at will, but regains it almost as quickly when you let off the throttle. i need to learn the finer points of feathering the throttle. it has been more than 5 years since i've driven this car (or any other manual for that matter) and it was fwd with considerably less power. i don't know if i'll ever get the wg to open at 8 pounds... if i do it wouldn't be for very long.

Oh man I love the 949's. They are so sexy on the rex. That f series looks right at home in there like it was meant for it.

So how does it feel to have so much work into something you dont want to drive it in case someone crashes into you? Haha. I have that feeling all the time.

this car went into a ditch in july. i'm not concerned at all, it is just a car. I built this car to beat on it on the regular. it isn't a trailer queen and it isn't strictly a weekend toy. it is a any day of the week go to work or pick up the kids from school kinda car. if it gets ruined by someone else smashing into it, as long as I can walk away i'm ok with that. the work I put into it was about the process more than the end result... there never is an end result. it constantly evolves and changes, just the same way you constantly learn and develop new skills. the process is the key. if you reach an end result you have missed the point imo. i'm currently making changes and hope to have it out in late may.

yeah, there just wasn't really room for anything else. really, I should have added a flex further up stream as well. :/ I can always add that after the fact though.

How do you like the RS3 tires?
Did the ditch fuck the car up? Its ok I assume?
I dont think I've ever completed one build either. Haha. Good way to sum it up. Glad you arent afraid to drive it, I respect that a lot.
-
the rs3's are fantastic value. you aren't going to get a better tire for that little money.
as a result of the ditch excursion:
1. all 4 rear subframe bushings were destroyed (now replaced with prothane bushings)
2. fuel tank was dinged up and had come disconnected at the fill neck tube- I scrapped it and am building a new one to be placed in front of the rear end.
3. the only cosmetic damage was the drivers side rear quarter has a dent and the tail light was damaged. i'm in the process of fixing it and I plan to flare the fenders a bit as well to spread the rear tires a bit.
4. the exhaust has some minor dents, but I will be building a new one without a cat or a resonator.

So did the ass end come out and place itself int the ditch? That was the only problem I ever had with my crx is it felt like the wheelbase was a few inches shorter than it should have been. But I'm glad to hear that the car wasn't destroyed.
-
here is the modified slave to make it fit. I made the mistake of making the tunnel without it installed on the transmission, so I had to move access to the bleed fitting.

ok, here is the rear suspension version 2.0. it has since been modified to 3.0 because the rocker angle on this was incorrect and did not allow the strut proper compression. i'm glad I decided to make this bolt in so modification is not too difficult.

you can see here where the rocker connects to the strut assembly that it is too far over the mount point on the cross bar. it was modified to sit behind it so compression begins on the outside of the cross bar mount point and finishes on the inside.

next up I added a meziere electric water pump. might as well make a cover for the factory pump and get rid of the pulley to clean things up:

but again, I didn't leave it like this either, I ended up going for a cleaner look by ditching the factory tensioner and idler pulleys and just making the belt shorter:

so I got thinking and realized I don't actually even need the water pump housing at all. it is just a big heavy casting I can get rid of (along with the block off plate I had made, so I went to water pump mod 3.0 by removing the housing and cnc machining up a simple thermostat housing that bolts directly to the block:

so, much has happened in the past few months. had the opportunity to do some testing last night at a local track. the car really needs a better tune. it does not appear to be tuned for midrange driving. balance throttle through turns is a challenge with it being so twitchy. anyway, it handles much better than i was expecting. i didn't push it too hard the first time out. my goal was to not wreck it and to get comfortable with the brakes and coming out of turns. it works well and i look forward to pushing it to the edge of its limits in the future.

Love the car man. Reconsider the head lights and corners.

yeah yeah yeah. i'm by no means a purist. i like the darked out look. white headlights/corners would work on a white car imo, but this car is not white. i'm surprised you guys aren't bitching about the big vibrant stickers on it and what not. fact of the matter is, these headlights are cheaper than finding a decent shape pair of stockers. plus they are lighter, so they actually make more fast.

Wow this just keeps bumping up to another of awesomeness :noel:
3 or 4 stage sump pump?
-
Wow this just keeps bumping up to another of awesomeness :noel:
-
the pump is just 3 stage. 2 scavenge on the pan should be enough. i should get a small amount of vacuum drawing oil vapor out of the valve cover through the -8an fitting on top that is tied into the strut tower bar and drains back to the tank. the breather is on the passenger side of the bar between the strut tower and the windshield wiper motor.
-
You work for vibrant now?? How did I miss that part?
Did you have to move the family?

Does it get hot in the cabin/cockpit, from the engine?
This keeps getting better :noel:
-
the trans tunnel does get a bit warm, but not uncomfortable. i'm adding a heater core so that may increase cabin temps slightly. i will put a valve in the system though to run it.

Long over due update. Car has sat since 2017. My son is pressuring me to get this running again. It needs some love so I will be replacing the fuel, coolant, intercooler and exhaust systems and doing some wiring installing some new bells and whistles. Spent 1.5 hrs pulling everything out after work yesterday:
